You got fire ants where you live?  Those are some nasty buggers.

Farmers fighting invasions of fire ants have a new weapon in their arsenal. It's a natural, non-toxic way to kill the ants by turning them into zombies whose heads pop off.

For the past several years, people in farming communities in Florida have been using this weapon, and now a group in Texas is also taking it up. They're releasing phorid flies from South America, tiny little humpbacked creatures whose lifecycle involves creating fire ant zombies. The flies dive-bomb fire ants, injecting their eggs into the insects' bodies.

When the larvae hatch, they worm their way into the ants' heads, slowly eating their brains. Once the brain is sufficiently eradicated, the ant starts engaging in extremely strange behavior. It wanders in random directions, and finally the larvae eat enough that the ant's head simply falls off.

The phorid fly continues to gestate inside the zombie head, eventually emerging from the ant's mouth as a fully-grown fly, ready to attack another fire ant. Agricultural experts think this is an effective and environmentally safe way to kill the ants, whose chompy habits destroy millions of dollars in electrical equipment and menace young cows.

Not only do the flies kill many ants, but they change the behavior of the survivors. Afraid of being attacked by the flies, the ants will forage closer to the nest, gathering half the amount of food they normally would. Less food means the hives shrink, bringing the fire ant population under control.

So, now I'd like to take this opportunity to take this thread off track a little.

Do zombie fire ants become more copious when you put them into a fridge?

^ I don't think they do. The only way zombie ants can become more copious is by spreading the zombie virus to living ants. But if you put living ants into a fridge soon after they've been infected with the zombie virus . . . who knows.

I went to the town today and I only saw a few of those ants I mentioned on page 7. I suppose that means they've already infiltrated the infrastructure and are waiting for the right moment to release their wrath upon us. Cool

Oh, this is good, but not funny.  Ants invaded my mailbox and tried to make a nest in it.  I think I nixed them all with the bug spray.  They were those little tiny buggers instead of the the hideous slightly larger fire ants.

I don't suppose this helps much but on arid land in Spain the ants I've seen are a sort of dull orange colour and are well copious in 30 degree+ heat. I've never yet felt the urge to ask my neighbour if I can put some in his fridge (I don;t have one - no mains electric) but now I've discovered this so-sensible poll I swear I will ask him when I go back in October.

But before i do this ground-breaking experiment I must ask: How long should we keep them in the fridge for?

Another question: can we rough-count them like the police do when on crowd control or must the before and after numbers be precise?

Finally, will the powers-that-be at PA give me a grant towards expenses involved in conducting this valuable experiment? We don't need much, just six cases of Corona and three weeks worth of very expensive food (for us, not the ants, of course, they can eat what they can scavange from Carlos's fridge).
It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

Indeed, the microwave won't kill the atomic super ants, it will only make them ten times more powerful. If those ants find their way to the fridge and begin to become more copious, there's no way you can hold them back on your own.

I wonder what would happen if you put ants in a piece of folded tinfoil and put that in the microwave... BRB Wink

I've got some news: My atomic super ants are finally copious enough to begin Operation Ant-I, which basically means that I'm going to release the contents of my fridge onto the streets. The ants are trained to kill every single human being they encounter, except for some exceptions. If you wish to survive their attacks, you should wear an impenetrable suit at all times. The first wave of attacks is scheduled to last for two (2) weeks worldwide, beginning tomorrow.

Fun fact about fridges and floods, not ant related.  Flood frequently flip fridges onto their backs.

I microwaved ants with my cousin a year ago. 3 minutes, and they seemed to be the same after!

You' may think you've gone too far this time Vompatti, but my Xenarthra army of aardvarks, echidnas, numbats, pangolins and armadillos are prepared and waiting. Following years of specialist training and dining exclusively on a lead enriched diet they are impervious to the radioactive formic acid bite of your puny ant colony and will only form as a tasty accompaniment to the crunchy exoskeleton of their bodies as they are lapped-up in their thousands by my advancing army.

Mmmmmwwwwaaahahahahah!.

^ Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrggghh . . . I knew I should have kept my wicked plan a secret. Now I need to develop a whole new race of INEDIBLE ATOMIC SUPER ANTS (TM) and make them more copious. And what am I supposed to do with this fridgeful of regular atomic super ants??? Angry Cry

It is my sad duty to inform you that the ants have left the fridge to go join in on the bar fight.
