Tom Wolfe - yeah, Hunter S. Thompson got the press, but Wolfe was the premier progressive journalist of his era and thensome; then he combined his journalist eye with that gift he had for words and became a Master of the Universe in the fiction world.  Even his last novel kept me riveted.

Then Phillip Roth - a personal favorite.....and a man I find myself defending of late against calls of misogyny embedded in his work.....I see exactly where they're coming from, then again, I couldn't imagine a Roth novel without the continual buzz of sexual undertone.  I also don't know too many women who read Roth religiously.  

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

best?  I think that was more on Jack and Louise Fletcher who made that movie... I thought the Flynt movie was more on Forman. It could have been a disaster in other hands...
