Topic: What does PA think about NIN? Posted: October 18 2014 at 19:49 |
Nine Inch Nails. People seem to either love them or hate them. What's your take on Mr. Reznor's "band"?

I have year zero or whatever it's called and think it's pretty horrible. The downward spiral is good but not really anything mind blowing. I'd probably rather listen to Ministry. Anyone remember them?

Agree. Just because Trent Reznor is a big fan of Adrian Belew does not mean they belong on here.

I have similar feelings. If I want to listen to industrial, I prefer to not have the typical verse-chorus-verse structure. While industrial is arguably my favorite genre, the hybrid with alternative rock/metal gives me an underwhelming response. But I could just be a purist.

Have been a fan ever since a friend first played Pretty Hate Machine in 1990. Saw them on 'The Fragile' tour at London Brixton Academy in 1999 and was amazed at how much it seemed like a post-modernist take on prog rock the whole affair was, right down to the projections and light show. Trent Reznor is a huge Floyd fan, claiming 'The Wall' as one of his biggest influences, especially on 'The Downward Spiral'. He is also a major contributor amongst the talking heads on the Rush 'Beyond The Lighted Stage' rockumentary. Just listen to 'Ghosts I-IV' and the spirit of Tangerine Dream is clearly evident. Reznor's involvement with film scores, firstly with David Lynch and now with David Fincher mark him as a modern day Edgar Froese. Whilst NIN may sound dark, harsh and borderline atonal to many purists, the same adjectives were applied to King Crimson in their 70's heyday and nobody would doubt their place in the prog pantheon.

I recall trying to listen to them, but something irritated me and I gave up. You know, you end up remembering not what they did or said, but how they made you feel ..
