Topic: Chester Thompson vs Simon Phillips Posted: October 31 2014 at 18:22
two of the best session drummers, with a huge prog, fusion, aor, and other styles to their pedegry. This is an attempt to make a poll without the obvious fan favourite. As a Toto fan i really dig Simons work with them he is a hero to me, replacing Jeff , and does some really cool stuff with other people as well. Chester is a beast behind the kit, a reall mighty bison, whos kickdrums is felt in your stummack even throug crap PC speakers.

Both.
Two of the best drummers around. Phillips' work with Toto and Gordon Giltrap is sublime and Thompson was brilliant with Weather Report, Genesis and Steve Hackett.

Phillips work with Mike Oldfield is good as well

Phillips. Pity that E and L didn't go with this P when Palmer was unavailable (imo)
That would've been something!
it was a real possibilty and probably would have happened if Cozy had turned it down. Phillips wanted it but was I assume not considered a big enough name. Shame as it would have been something special as you say. Phillips was well tuned to prog as evidenced by his work with Oldfield. Cozy did a good job but was not musically the right 'fit' imo.

Thompson was a good sideman for Genesis (excellent on "The Lady Lies" from the second box set). I have to give it to Simon Phillips, though. A little more snazzy for my tastes, and I really liked his work with Manzanera. He just made a rare appearance at a local jazz club here in L.A., and I, of course, missed it. Damn.

You can say that again. All of E,L, & Powell (God rest his soul) was a little off, for that matter.
