Topic: Afraid of Sunlight: Marillion Posted: November 08 2014 at 12:52 |
This follow up to the gigantic concept album Brave by Marillion always leaves me baffled. There seems to be a shortage of Steve Rothery lead guitar magic on this one and many of the songs don't really grab me. What's your opinion of AOS?

Q magazine put it well when they reviewed it. They said if any other band had released this album, aside from one called Marillion, it would be a worldwide smash hit.
It is an album which bleeds emotion, and has perhaps the finest conclusion in King ever made.
AoS is an album every single lover of great music should own.

Apart from Cannibal Surf Babe, this album is pretty good. The track Out Of This World is brilliant.

What do you mean "pretty good"? And what do you mean "Apart from Cannibal Surf Babe"? I like this album more than "Brave" but not as much as "Marbles" when it comes to the non-Fish era of this band. Great album in my opinion.

I'm just having some fun with you Tom but I wasn't too impressed with This Strange Engine like a lot of people are, but i'd point out "Season's End" as one I rate fairly high when it comes to that period of Marillion.

It's one of the few post Fish Marillion things I own. I think the title track is one of the best things they have written and certainly my favorite track on the album.

One of the few H-era Marillions I liked back in the day. It's been forever since I played it though...I should do so again and see if it kept it's magic for me.

This album really cemented me in as a Marillion fan although their latter material leaves me mostly cold.

I got the 2CD remastered version and on the second cd there are some demos of songs that did not make it on the album (Icon -sounds like a work in progress demo, but Live Forever and Mirages are quite good), an acoustic demo of Afraid of Sunlight (Hogarth plays piano and sings) and studio out takes of Out of this World (which I've grown to like more than the album version ) and Cannibal Surf Babe. there's also a short demo called Bass frenzy where Pete and Ian jam a bit. I've also heard some demo versions of King and Beyond You, plus an early version of Accidental Man (didn't know it was made during the AOS sessions, but sounds different then the TSE version, but it's quite nice).

This is my husband's favorite album and I would say one of my top 3 H-era Marillion albums.

It's not my favorite Marillion CD, but Beautiful is one of my favorite Marillion songs.
