Crass vs. Husker Du
Crass was one of the first of the "art punk" bands. While retaining a traditional punk sound for many songs, they also sported collages and spoken word releases. They are often credited with popularizing anarchist punk. Husker Du was a hardcore band who often were dissatisfied with the state of hardcore. With their French-with-umlauts name (unfaithfully rendered here), their playing of classic rock covers, and their double album Zen Arcade, they became one of the most unique bands of the scene. I pick Crass. Their take on the punk sound and their tendency to experiment (even at the beginning) wins me over. Husker Du have some thrilling moments, but I hate the way most of their records sound. As if the recording engineers had no idea how to harness their sound. It's quite a hindrance. Even so, I love Metal Circus, Flip Yr Wig, and about half of Zen Arcade. But Crass! I think their best ones are Penis Envy and Christ The Album, and those are well crafted and intelligent, with clarity of purpose. The former is even a concept album, and a potent one at that.

Husker Du!!
I can respect Crass, but musically They're not really my thing. Husker Du from Metal Circus through Flip Your Wig is often brilliance, and Candy Apple Grey had some good tunes.

I do like Husker Du but I'm afraid that Crass take the biscuit here. Great songs, experimentation and politics. Much more than just a punk band.

The Huskers. You just can't vote against Zen Arcade.

Husker Du for me...they headlined the 1st hardcore show I ever saw and were responsible for getting me into those other great SST bands (Minutemen, Black Flag, SWA, Meat Puppets, Zoogz Rift, etc..)
Here's a shot I got of Bob Mould around 1984... |
