The Damned vs. The Replacements
A band known for their image, the Damned were the dark, romantic precursors to goth rock. Singer Dave Vanian often wore heavy make-up to make him look like a vampire at shows. Eventually, they came to have something of a goth rock sound before they broke up.
Which Dave Vanian was undead, Paul Westenberg was drunk and high and smarter than you. Fusing punk with pop hooks, cynicism, and drunk wit, they went from a simple punk band to one of the first American alternative rock bands.

The Damned by the widest margin possible. Their earliest punk stuff was pretty good, but nothing compared to the trio of Machine Gun Etiquette, Black Album, and Strawberries. These are top rate post punk albums with pop potential. Captain Sensible left the band after those, and it wasn't quite the same, but those 3 albums are amazing.
And the Replacements are just ewww. Never really liked them, except for a few songs on their debut (punk) album.

The Damned, mainly for The Black album, but I even like their take on a more gothic sound with Phantasmagoria (although it doesn't resonate as much as their earlier stuff).

No contest really. Have to go home win again. THe Damned produced the first British punk single and album. Damned Damned Damned is a great punk album with soo much energy. Machine Gun Etiquette is chocker full of great songs. Then on the Black Album they had the nerve to do a 17 minute song! (CurtainCall).
I also had the pleasure to see them live in 82 and they were fantastic. THey actually had the nerve to play Curtain Calll live. One of the best live acts I've seen.

Biased I'm afraid.
I saw them live in '89, for their "farewell tour". They've had several farewell tours since then, lol. All I really remember is that Captain Sensible was naked by the end of the show.
Oh and I'm glad you mentioned Curtain Call. That's a great epic-length track.

Yes. Sensible was stark bollock naked by the end of the gig I went to as well. Something involving a couple of 'Nuns' also with little clothing. He did 'Happy Talk' which I think had just been a hit single and got plenty of deserved abuse. They are still going so I may well go to their next 'fairwell' tour! Unfortunately, Rat is no longer with the band and neither is whatsherface from the Gun Club *retired* I believe.

This is coming from someone who thinks The Smiths is the best band ever.
The Replacements definitely have their Let It Be, while The Damned... Damned Damned Damned is their best punk album, and Strawberries is their best gothic rock album.

Ah, The Damned were one of my first teenage passions: loud, obnoxious, bad taste... Everything a metalhead would approve! Their albums from the 80's lacked the aggressiveness of the initial guitar sound, but had excellent "hooks" in their songs. Furthermore, would you dare to disrespect the Vampire that is Dave Vanian, a truelife gravedigger?

Got into the Damned after seeing them guest on the Halloween episode of The Young Ones. Have their 2CD best of The Light at the end of the Tunnel. From punk to goth they were completely brilliant
Replacements yeah! I was even at the group ending show in Chicago when Paul Westerberg walked off the stage.
I read that just about everyone walked off one after the other. Must've been some gig.
It was outside at Grant Park. We were so far back into the crowd we couldn't really see what was going on. After four songs everything just kind of stopped.

The Damned - their debut is magnificent (not just New Rose). Just that one record beats The Replacements alone. Possibly my favourite punk album too, alongside Fresh Fruit.
