This could account for AFTK gaining so much support. It may be a person's favorite, but it certainly did not have the same impact as Moving Pictures. Myself, I prefer the later album.

I somehow feel that 2112 would have been a better match against Moving Pictures for this poll, given that 2112 seems to be the album that finaly put them on the map, as far as I understand it. The album in which they finally demonstrated what they were capable of doing.

My vote goes to Moving pictures because that guitar at the beginning of A Farewell to Kings, was so good, however Geddy's vocals soon came up and those were not what I enjoy. Moving pictures on the-other-hand I think the vocals improved thus less high pitched.

I can't vote. Because this is Rush. And I don't care for Rush -- not after 2112, which was obviously their expiration date.

Hmmm.... I tend to disagree, but as a long term Rush fan that's not surprising. I've made that mistake with other bands, maybe you should try and relisten some time.

I voted for both as they are they are my two favourite Rush albums. ( I also don't understand the question , shouldn't the choices have been 2112 and Permanent Waves?!)

Although I care little for Rush, if you go back to the original question it has to be MP. Culturally, 1981 was a prog desert so it attracted a prog audience hungry for decent product (I have to admit that 'Tom Sawyer' is a bass driven monument) following the collapse/shift to commercialism by established prog acts. It is record companies that try to think strategically... So, one of the best prog albums ever was released the same year: the stunning 'Ceux du dehors' by Univers Zero but hardly anyone noticed...shame.

Moving Pictures was a real breakthrough album in terms of sales. They achieved this without selling out or losing core fans; as far as I know, so MP gets the vote.
It's also my favourite Rush album. AFTK is also an excellent and important album. |

I'm no expert on Rush at all, but as a relative outsider I got the impression that Moving Pictures was indeed some sort of turning point.

Moving Pictures is pretty much a perfect album from start to finish. It's the most solid album they ever recorded. I would probably pick 2112 over A Farewell to Kings.
