Based on the question and the choices, it clearly is Moving Pitchers.

A Farewell to Kings. |

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night. |

Strategically, A Farewell To Kings. It is the music and performance that forms the basis of the audience relationship with Rush. The concept pieces, the classical guitar intro to the title track, the ability to follow 2112, the ability to rock hard but with intellect. The partner album Hemispheres then completes this phase of the strategy.
Mezzanine moment - Permanent Waves indicates a slight stream lining of sound as the band move on (aka progress) and The Spirit Of Radio sets up the pop cultural impact of Moving Pictures. Up from the underground now Rush can be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jackson. Gosh. Fantastic. Now Rush can present their high IQ rock, kind of filling in that area of rock Blue Oyster Cult (blues-less high powered rock with wit). Culturally it benefited Rush and made prog rock acceptable for anyone (if that was the thought it was certainly the effect). Recall this was a time when epics were 5 - 6 minutes long and Asia were the new prog flagship. Moving Pictures made this re evaluated prog rock music available to millions which was a very good thing. No growth and they'd have died and this site may have turned out very different. But to get to Moving Pictures Rush needed Permanent Waves as Kings needed 2112. Rush had the strategy giving people the culture. Well done those guys. Everyone's a winner... P.S. cannot vote. It's not a popularity thing, it's a differential identification. See above for details. ;)

Moving Pictures completely altered the trajectory of the band and provided the template for the rest of their career. Even Neil says it was the album in which Rush arrived (though we may disagree). So, Pictures for me.

Saw a rerun of the recent appearance of Geddy Lee on That Metal Show, and he pretty much affirmed that Moving Pictures was THE breakout album (he also said that Tull's Thick As a Brick concert was the best he'd ever seen). With that said, I'm surprised this poll is a dead heat.

Moving Pictures; it's pretty much the first thing MOST people think of when they think of Rush.

If this poll was hosted on any other type of site (heavy metal, classic rock, pop music, etc.) I'd bet Moving Pictures would win because the majority of voters would vote for the album they know. But since this is a prog site where Rush is often regarded as a snub from the "Big 6 of prog", I guess it isn't too surprising. A little, yes. |
