Joy Division vs. Talking Heads
Joy Division was not the first post-punk band, but were some of its greatest pioneers and have gained a high status in the indie rock world. With their bleak lyrics, their cold atmosphere, and jagged grooves, they inspired millions of indie rockers after them. Their album Closer was also the first album to be called "gothic rock."
On the other side of the Atlantic, there was Talking Heads. Starting as a post-punk band they progressed to incorporate funk and afrobeat to the extent of becoming something completely other than a punk band. Their album Remain in Light has gained them similarly high status as Joy Division, and although their atmosphere is a lot less bleak than Joy Division, there is a similar emphasis on interesting repetitive grooves.

I'll go Talking Heads. Joy Division was a really good band but not really in the same league as far as actual achievement (i.e. No points given for the singer offing himself). By the same token, Talking Heads really annoy the crap out of me sometimes but Fear of Music, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues are all phenomenal albums. Joy Division had one near-phenomenal album (Closer) and some cool singles (NOT Love Will Tear Us Apart, I dislike that song).

I adore Remain in Light, but I adore Closer even more, maybe even marginally more. I do not like Unknown Pleasures, however, and Talking Heads is generally more consistent outside of their magnum opus. This is a tough one for me. I'll refrain for now.

Like most of these polls I find it an apples vs. oranges thing, but I vastly prefer Joy Division because of the entire dystopian futuristic aesthetic a lot of their music has going on. Not sure if they're better or worse than Talking Heads, but they do resonate more with my own cultural wavelength.

Love them both but have to give points to Joy Division for their raw originality. Plus I don't see the genius in Remain in Light that most others do. A lot of it bores me to death. Much prefer all the other albums up through Little Creatures.
