Cynic's Focus, Atheist's two greats - Unquestionable Presence and Elements -, Gorguts' legendary Obscura, and Behold... The Arctopus's Skullgrid. Mainly the classics, then, but there's plenty to love in the genre, as stagnant as it often is.

For thrash I would say Voivod from 'Killing Technology' through 'Nothingface', Watchtower's 'Control and Resistance' and Coroner's 'No More Color'.

For black metal I would consider Deathspell Omega to be considered quite technical, with the 'Kenose' EP being my favorite release by them.

For tech death...there's just so many:
Atrocity - Todessehnsucht
Anomalous - Ohmnivalent
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
Ulcerate - Vermis
Demilich - Nespithe
Origin - Antithesis
Athiest - Unquestionable Presence
Spawn Of Possession - Incurso
...and a whole bunch of other stuff (short for time atm)

I've just bought Exivious - Liminal based on a recent sample from progsphere. Tickled my fancy but not a genre I'm too familiar tbh.

Lots of great technical metal artists out there. I can recommend Diskord, which is a Norwegian tech/prog death metal act, with a pretty old school brutal sound but with loads of technical twists.

Some of Cadaverīs and Carbonizedīs releases are also pretty interesting if you like the old school variant of technical death metal.

Drottnar is also furiously fast played and fusion tinged technical Black metal.

Great bandClap! I missed them when they played at ProgDay, but hope to have the opportunity to see them again. I also second Richardh's mention of Exivious. I reviewed their debut album here on PA, and gave it a resounding 5 stars.

^ I'm hoping Once More Around The Sun has some impressive chops..the artwork alone suggests a winner here, the music just has to measure up to its presentation......

Death - The Sound Of Perseverance, Symbolic and Human
Mastodon - Once More 'round The Sun
and i'm starting to apreciate some voivod stuff, the bass guitar on Nothigface is just amazing.

non progs, but still extreme
Sepultura - Arise, Beneath The Remains and Chaos A.D
Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

i'm not a real apreciator of extreme music, but those bands are pretty good.
