^ That's code. I believe there's some kind of a disagreement between the forum software and your machine.

I don't believe you can start a thread on this lounge, but you can start your own newbie thread on this one and address the issue in that thread. Report back if you have any success or failure.

Here's a slightly vulgar comparison and not totally fair. They are like the early 70's jazz-rockfusion version of Dream Theater. Most noobs curious of jazz(rock) are blown away hearing MO's two first albums. Myself included. After a while their frenetic noodling and constantly showing off chops combined with lack of substance gets tiresome. Especially after you discover all the real great stuff that's out there. Excellent musicians that were put to use better in other constallations (I have not heard Apocalypse, though). That said some of Inner Mountain Flame and Birds of Fire's quieter moments are not without beauty.

The difference I was mentioning is about the mainstream listeners. Everybody knows Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd. In this sense Gentle Giant are second league as well as Mahavishnu. I'm considering only the years up to 1977 more or less. Nothing to do with the beauty of their music.

Gentle giant were probably the ultimate prog band. Surely not 2nd league

"Volcanic intensity" is perhaps the best metaphor I've ever seen for MO! Thanks!!

I greatly enjoy "Visions from The Emerald Beyond," it has very symphonic aspects (choral vocals are amazing), and it certainly displays the "volcanic intensity"!

Mahavishnu is not easy-listening music, is it? Clap

^ I agree with you. "Visions from The Emerald Beyond" is a Great album . I like "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire" too. IMO these 3 albums are "Masterpiece" with no doubt. As you said MO isn't easy-listening and people must listen more than 1 or 2 times if they want to get MO music correctly! (IMO)

Haven't read through this thread yet, but I just got off a Mahavishnu Orchestra/John McLaughlin kick the past few weeks, but I could see going back for more :)

Not sure what the mess below is about...

Birds Of Fire let down by thin production.
The Inner Mounting Flame is their Tour De Force a bit like what Crimson did with Red.

Really driving album with a great production.

Hasn't aged either.

You can tell Birds Of Fire was made in the 70s.

Between Nothingness And Eternity is a classic live album.

Love The Trident Sessions also, takes the vibe of The Inner Mounting Flame to another level.

I really love the album Apocalypse also but especially the two tracks Vision Is A Naked Sword and Hymn To Him.
When MO went fom a jazz rock band to a jazz rock/symphonic prog band.

Must listen to Visions Of The Emerald Beyond again.

Have it hidden away in my cd collection but never get it out.
I remember it having some nice tracks.

I've read that producing that album was George Martin's proudest achievement which is a great statement considering he was the Beatles producer.
