This somehow speaks to me so yea.
If i look for something too hard, all i find is that it is missing - instead of seeing that a band brings other thinks to the table. So.

This. I generally just like a band to show me who they are through their music. That requires no specific ingredients, but for ingredients to come together in a tasty whole.

A strange thing I have found with some newer bands is albums that I enjoy but can't remember much of anything about them - even after repeated listens. I can't quite put my finger on this phenomenon, because after 3-4 listens I am usually able to remember most if not all of an album. |
Because you are not being moved by it emotionally.

For instance,
I NEED a great drummer. Not just chops, but one who can make me believe he is not playing to a click track (even if he is) and can play fluidly across odd meters or make me feel like he is truly inside the music, not just keeping time, but playing into the music melodically and conceptually.
I NEED the melodic instruments like keys and guitars to work together, not compete against one another or walk all over one another. I like them to understand composition and be comfortable leaving space also.
I NEED a bassist who is not a former or failed guitar player. One who listens to the drummers foot and links that to the melodic line in a way that makes me feel he or she is in touch with both equally.
If there is a singer, I NEED the vocals to move me with character and unique intonation. I don't want the vocalist to make me think they are copying someone's style. They need to convince me that they are feeling the lyric or are making sounds with their voice that represent something they are feeling in their own way.
I NEED the band to sound like they are playing together in real time (even if they are not) I don't need a recording of the band to make me visualize that they are experts at editing on a computer.
I NEED to know the band is actually a band that can properly represent themselves in a live situation.
These are critical things I need. But I know I am a tough sell,
What do you need or not need in your Prog?

Hmmm i am just wondering what u think of a guitar (el) + piano combination without any drums (and bass) as progressive duo. Just curious :) An example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGqt1nioU7Y |
If there is a "Rock" element or what we call ProgRock, then it has to have drums. All rock bands have drums. I know everyone wants to think of prog as having no rules but it does. Prog can substitute guitar for keys like ELP, but you can't take drums out of it. If you do, then it becomes something else. You can't play heavy metal without drums. Folk, classical, ambient etc can exist without drumkit.

I just picked up the CD/DVD-audio set. Surprisingly, it takes 3 drummers to sound like Bill Bruford. Or not surprisingly.

It had to be witnessed! Not surprising at all. I never heard the LTIA material sound that good (and I saw the band in 1973, but without Muir). Pat Mastelotto did a great Jamie Muir impression, and Gavin Harrison did double-duty on Melltron synth on a few songs.
One of the best concerts I've ever seen, bar none.

I only need mellotron, mini-moog and old sounds coming from the 70's.

What ingredients are absolutely essential? For me, there HAS to be an interesting combinations of elements or influences. That's almost a one-phrase definition of Prog. The other ingredient is a singer who can sing. As a choir singer myself, I can't listen to really mediocre singers. One example - not prog - is Smashing Pumpkins. Their music is entertaining, but listening to Billy Corgan's voice is like torture.

What Ingredients do you NEED in your Prog?

I like all kinds of prog, but the one thing I guess I NEED is for it to be honest. A lot of these meticulously processed neo-prog "classics" don't evoke any emotion for me, because they're not inherently experimenting, but just solely trying to replicate their favourite bands. When you hear about the influences of these 70s bands, they're always so far from progressive music (e.g. Peter Gabriel idolising Otis Redding), so I think it needs to be inately "risky" and pushing the boundaries. If you're going to be an artist, you wouldn't do inferior copies of Picasso or whoever to be like him, you'd have to take from their template of experimentation and work with it in your own way. Using strange time signatures and Hammond organs is outdated now, and there's a need for a fresh approach in my opinion.

The more I NEED in my music the more I'm let down. So I don't need anything from my music - other than to be swept away by it. I like surprises.
I have a few female friends who make up the same kind of parameters when dating: 'has to be athletic, over 1.80 m, children's doctor and handy with a screwdriver.'
As I see it, they're setting themselves up for failure even before they've started. I think the same goes for people who need to scratch certain musical aspects off their list before they're able to appreciate X band.

I need: - the music not being more of the same after 2 minutes - exploration in musical possibilities - only complexity that improves the song - chromatic notes occasionally - a good bass
