Can anyone recommend me some bands? I like the following features in prog rock:
- good bass guitar / slap bass / distorted bass - heavy guitar optional - no screaming/grunting - harmonic minor riffs - interesting rhythmic variations - experimenting with sounds or timbre - making use of less common instruments (like violin, djembe, ...) - avoiding the usual verse-chorus, or just too much repitition in general These are bands which I think have a great sound: - Tool - Porcupine Tree - Karnivool - Amplifier - Tesseract - Magic Pie - Opeth - Rishloo - Muse - Dream Theater - Deftones |

Seeing the list of bands you like, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Thank You Scientist and The Tea Club, two excellent New Jersey bands that I have had the privilege of seeing on stage a number of times. Here are links to their websites, where you can listen to some of their music:

Try Intronaut, particualrly their two most recent albums Valley of Smoke and Habitual Levitations where it's more a case of gruff singing that growling.

Moraine might tick a few boxes for you. New album streaming here:
Some pretty good stuff IMO with a lot of different ingredients in the stew. On a bit more of an avant-prog tip, Arktis/Air are just great: Both bands have an undeniable Crimson influence in places, but IMO there's a great deal more to them than that. |

Pain of Salvation, Riverside, Haken, and Devin Townsend (Terria is excellent).

My favourite album of last year was Heretics by a band called Dream The Electric Sleep. I'm not sure if it ticks all the boxes but its damn good anyway.

If you like Dream theater, you should check out Redemption. Also, highly recomended is Fates Warning, especially the Alder era.
Since you like Tool, check out DeadSoul Tribe, Soen, In the Silence and Klone. As you like Deftones, check out Palms (it's the vocalist of Detones with members of Isis). |

Thanks for the great recommendations everyone. :D
Most of these bands seem pretty awesome, I've checked about half of them out so far. It's also funny to see I recognize some of the bands, like Riverside, Fates Warning and Soen. You guys are making me really happy! (More recommendations are always welcome of course. :) )

If you like Dream Theater, you should check out this band called Rush. A lot of people say Rush sounds like Dream Theater.
