I picked 3 master artists from the 70's who have produced album cover artwork for some of the most famous bands of that era. Which of these three would you pick as your favorite? I made a short summary of each courtesy of Wikipedia below:
  1. Mark Wilkinson (born in Windsor, England on 3 October 1952) is a British illustrator. He is best known for the detailed cover art that he created for a number of British bands, most prominently the neo-progressive rock band Marillion in the 1980s. Though versed in a number of techniques, he is considered to be a master of the airbrush.
  2. William Roger Dean (born 31 August 1944), better known as Roger Dean, is an English artist, designer and publisher. He is best known for his work on posters and album covers for musicians, which he began painting in the late 1960's. The artists he did the most art for are English rock bands Yes, Uriah Heep, Budgie and Asia.
  3. Paul Whitehead is a British painter and graphic artist known for his surrealistic album covers for artists on the Charisma Records label in the 1970s, such as Genesis and Van der Graaf Generator.

Big hugs to all Hug

The folks at Hipgnosis mostly weren't drawers or painters, but they knew every last trick of the trade of photography, pre and post. Also, the cover to Go 2.

I'm not very good with names, but I do really like Roger Dean's art for Yes's 'Relayer' and 'Fragile'. Smile

Storm Thorgerson is one of my favorite album art creators, he made some great art for Pink Floyd and others.

True, this is a very hard choice for me too, Polymorphia Smile
I love all 3 too, very hard to choose however I picked Mike Wilkinson, I can look at his works, even the same ones and each time it amazes me, I keep seeing different things, my imagination taking me into a different direction every time, just like story telling in dreams or lord of the rings fantasy like Big smileLOL hihihi hugs Hug

Voted Dean although it was close with Whitehead a very close second-Wink--actually like SEBTP artwork the best but she is not mentioned here.

Awww I am sorry, twosteves,
I only picked 3 to choose from, having in mind that they are most recognizable but this does not mean that other artists are any less tho'.

I voted Dean simply because many of my favorite albums are graced with his cover art.
I have a 1975 Roger Dean calendar with a few drawings that I have never seen on covers. I also had an album sized book of his work. It was very high quality with heavy glossy pages.
I recently gave it to my son who is a working artist doing original oil on canvas and graphic novels.

I think you misread. I don't love any of the artists. I picked Roger Dean because I like him the most of these, I think, but I can't say any of them are favorites of mine. They can all get a bit campy to my tastes. But hugs anyway. Hug

Roger Dean for me...not only for the album covers but the fantastic Yes stage sets.  The 1st prog concert I saw was Gentle Giant/Yes in '76 and they had the incredible 3 headed hydra stage...fantastic!

All three at the list are great, but such a strong connection to the music of one band that only Roger Dean had / has. Therefore Roger Dean is an unique artist and my vote goes to him.

I choose Mike Wilkinson in visual art terms, thus not influenced by my music choices or favorite bands. Genesis is a big favorite of mine and so is YES, more so than Marillion.
All 3 are iconic artists and they work remains imprinted in my head.
Besides YES, Roger Dean produced artwork for other favorite artists and albums of mine.
