ELP easily (never thought I'd say that).

I'm no fan of Barrett era Floyd and ITCOTCK sounds so terribly dated now.

I'm afraid it's this, and ELP leads the pack because of it.

a prog album sounding dated eh? ''shocker''Wink

Crimson's album admittedly had some issues from a production point of view and often I prefer to listen to the punchier In The Wake of Posiedon but nevertheless Epitaph and 21st Century Schizoid Man are on a different planet to anything on ELP's debut and I say that as an ELP fan.Smile

I suppose you're right about incredible. Schizoid Man, I Talk to the Wind, Epitaph, Moonchild (the song), and the title track are all incredible and brilliant, while the jam on Moonchild takes tedium to an incredible level.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

21st Century Schizoid Man and In The Court are my favourite 2 pieces but ELPs' debut has a slight margin (probably due to no equivalent 10 minute noodle solo for the otherwise brilliant Moonchild) Maybe it should have been an electric thing...
The extensive use of piano (3 fates is awesome) and that bass heavy Barbarian being comparable to the opening number from the KC album. Greg Lake must have been having the time of his life...

Piper is probably the most original series of more or less related numbers.

Some very narrow margins there and thankfully the nestle happily in the collection.

Bless 'em all. WinkSmile

Three 5 star albums in my books, but I cast my vote for Piper.

..and the ELP debut doesn't sound dated to you..??

It's not a criticism. It's a great album, but as with all music from that era it does sound dated because it was recorded on prehistoric studio equipment.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

oh man that is no doubt... of course ELP Clap

However I do really enjoy that first KC album...however like some, I really thought Moonchild was a piece of sh*t.. well at least after Lake stopped singing that is. LOL

However my view and opinion on it changed when Mark uncorked his review of the album, which if there was a top 5 or 10 list of greatest reviews ever done here.. this would on be on it. While I'd never be loony enough to say I enjoy Moonchild, now I can at least appreciate it and doesn't detract from the overall listening experience. In fact, I think it adds to it.

Can someone explain why Moonchild is so hated here. I absolutely adore that song.

"The Illusion", being that it is a rather unstructured and soft improv sequence, makes many fall asleep. We're unique in enjoying it.
