The music phenomena known as the Singer-Songwriter epoch had its roots in the sixties with the likes of Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison, but reached its full flower in the early 70s. I offer you a baker's dozen of the most highly regarded from that period, several of which I love as much as any prog album. That was the great thing about the 1970s: a damn great album released every week, no matter the genre.

My personal preferences are Tea for the Tillerman, After the Gold Rush, Blue and Moondance. What are yours?

Oh, Pink Moon. How you will never, ever be touched.

Of those, Blue, After The Gold Rush, Sweet Baby James, and Moondance. As for Elton, I'd rather have Madman Across The Water.

I'll vote later.

went with Cat Stevens, with probably Croce, McLean, Morrison, King, and Young next more or less in that order.  Not intimately familiar with all of them, but I have NEVER gotten james Taylor.  Very weak to my ears

Superb album and one of his best, but I thought plopping Dylan in might skew the vote. Plus I don't think Dylan was ever considered one of the "Singer-Songwriter" group fashionable in the 70s, strictly speaking. I also neglected to add Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen, the four Beatles solo and a host of others, as the list was already too long.

Blue, easily.

Nick Drake would be my second place - the rest fall flat for me. Morrison had better records to come.

Jim Croce for me, he was such a down to earth and genuine artist.

Voted Tim Buckley, though Starsailor isn't really a typical album for him.  It's weird as hell, which goes a long way towards making me like it as much as I do.  I like his more straightforward albums too, but not quite as much.  I'm not generally too hot on singer/songwriter types, although I do worship at the altar of Bob Dylan.   He is a very special case, almost inhumanly good.  From this list, I'll also give a very honorable mention to Neil Young and Nick Drake.  Both of those are great albums, and both artists have even greater albums than these.

Other: Al Stewart, he should be included here too. From the list, Cat Stevens, I enjoy his music as well.

From that list, Neil Young but if you'd have picked Bryter Later it would have been Nick Drake.

I've always been a big Neil Young fan,   but Mitchell, Drake, and Morrison are close behind for me.

Several favorites on his list but I've always leaned toward Van Morrison.
