1970s Singer-Songwriters

The music phenomena known as the Singer-Songwriter epoch had its roots in the sixties with the likes of Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison, but reached its full flower in the early 70s. I offer you a baker's dozen of the most highly regarded from that period, several of which I love as much as any prog album. That was the great thing about the 1970s: a damn great album released every week, no matter the genre.

Of those, Blue, After The Gold Rush, Sweet Baby James, and Moondance. As for Elton, I'd rather have Madman Across The Water.

Plus, where's Blood On The Tracks?

Cat and Van next

Voted Tim Buckley, though Starsailor isn't really a typical album for him.  It's weird as hell, which goes a long way towards making me like it as much as I do.  I like his more straightforward albums too, but not quite as much.  I'm not generally too hot on singer/songwriter types, although I do worship at the altar of Bob Dylan.   He is a very special case, almost inhumanly good.  From this list, I'll also give a very honorable mention to Neil Young and Nick Drake.  Both of those are great albums, and both artists have even greater albums than these.
