Always liked The Mothers a lot more than the solo so it may not be the best starter place.

I've only got 7 of his albums, but 4 of them I easily like more than the other three, so this list comes from those four albums. Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, and Apostrophe are 5 star albums, and Joe's Garage has a few great tracks, especially near the end.
1) Waka/Jawaka 2) Son of Mr. Green Genes 3) Willie the Pimp 4) The Gumbo Variations 5) Packard Goose 6) Watermelon in Easter Hay 7) Peaches En Regalia 8) Don't Eat the Yellow Snow - the whole suite 9) Apostrophe 10) Big Swifty I've also got Tinseltown Rebellion (good album), You Are What You Is (meh), and One Size Fits All (not very familiar with). |

OSFA and You Are What You Is are great albums. There are a couple YAWYI songs that almost made my top 10, Dumb All Over and Heavenly Bank Account. A couple of the suites on that album are classic Zappa, with some of his most confident, biting cynicism. Throw on Beauty Knows No Pain, and tell me that isn't awesome.
