Hi Roberto and welcome to the site I'm not sure if you know already, but it's possible to create polls in this area, which incidentally also is where i moved your thread to. I hope you don't mind. Again welcome aboard - I hope you enjoy your time here and get excited about the music. Cheers David

Not a huge fan of a lot of The Mars Volta's output. I do love Octahedron - yah, I know The Mars Volta light. That being said, while I am a big Wilson fan, I don't think guitarist is Steven's strongest attribute. So on the basis of guitar alone - got go with Omar.

Oh and in regards to an actual vote.....erm....yeah....
I love both for very different reasons. Omar is arguably the more versatile, but I just love Steven's playing too. He is such a great psych guitarist.

Difficult to judge as I listen to Steven a lot more than Omar. Amputecture is the Mars Volta album I've taken a shine to. I admire stuff like Frances The Mute but it scares the sh*t out of me!
Also I don't isolate the guitarist when I'm listening as much as do with keyboard players and drummers ( grew up saturation listening to ELP so I'm presumably brain damaged and beyond repair). Wilson does what he does well enough for the style of music. Same for Omar I guess.

Steven Wilson rules Song writing, composition, producing, arrangement, and applying pedigree history of progressive rock! ...And I like Wilson's vocals better. Steven's solo Deluxe box book of Art is off the chart cool!
Omar's Guitar? ( Even though Steven Wilson is friends with Robert Fripp) Omar follows Fripp's Guitar heart, and Omar is more High Energy, Omar's full of Surprises, and by a nose- Omar's Live Shows blow my mind! Yet the truth is... I listen to Steven more than Omar, but that might be because I am an Old Maid! 52 years old! Ouch! But I look 40! I really do! ( Was that a lunge and a reach?) Hey Roberto!!! Good comparison...Steve and Omar...Kudos Roberto for the Steven-Omar connection! As a female, I can tell you Omar screws better than Steven! My Texas Prog Circle hypothesizes- Steven Wilson is Asexual...Without a woman or man Steven can create Muzak 20 days a week...73 hours a day...Ad Infinitum...Without end or limit.................................... That's Steven's secret!!!

Omar may be a better guitar player (I guess Steven Wilson himself would admit it easliy, since he actually often uses the help of other guitar players on Porcupine Tree... and on his last 2 albums he's had another lead guitar player), but I like the music from Steven Wilson much more. By the way, given this replies given on this thread, it would seem most people prefer the music from Omar/Mars Volta over Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree... but I have the impression that if a poll had been made, Wilson would have comfortably won.

Why?
Omar is light years ahead in guitar playing and Swilson's writing has stagnated since GfD. Sure Omar doesn't write lyrics, so i guess Swilson has that on him - but Omar's songwriting is both more unique and interesting. Regardless of whether you like TMV, ATDI, or his solo output - i'm not sure how albums that are noted as being heavily sounding of classic era prog can be compared so the guy that wrote every part for TMV. A band that actually sounded progressive. Porcupine Tree had amazing songwriting, sure, stronger than Swilson's recent efforts, but again they lack the distinctive punch and "wow" factor in structure and textures. Another point that could lean in Swilson's favor is emotional connection. Regarding TMV - Cedric's abstract lyricism and post-harcore vocalization isn't for everyone and can easily sway those who dislike the scene or just find it hard to get into. I won't say TMV lack emotion, lyrically or musically, but in this case i can see how Swilson's accessibility can be helpful here. I guess the comparison just echoes my frustration in the concept of trying to sound like 70's prog. A reason why i find Swilson' best solo record to be Insurgentes, and why PT is a much, much stronger musical entity than anything his solo has had to offer. So - all in all - i'm not sure how the comparison is insulting to Swilson. If anything it's insulting to Omar. |
