I love hearing saxophone used in prog, like on soft machine's "third" LP.
Can I receive reccomendations on bands/albums/songs that employ heavy use of saxophone for extended periods of time? I think soft machine - slightly all the time is perfect with its use of sax and would love to hear more in this vein, I am listening with spotify at the moment but going to pick up third at the record shop tomorrow. Thanks ![]() |

Any Gong album that Didier Malherbe plays on and going slightly off piste, Shamanimal by his Hadouk Trio. Also Kevin Ayers Shooting at the Moon with Lol Coxhill. Finally House on the Hill by Audience. Plenty of others but these are my favourites.

Besides the obvious Van Der Graaf Generator, I would also recommend East of Eden, whose debut, Mercator Projected, predates In the Court of the Crimson King of a few months.

^ yeah Mercator Projected seconded. That's a proto-prog classic in my book.

Check out Seven Impale. Their debut, City of the Sun, was one of my favourite releases of '14.

early King Crimson has something with the saxophone from time to time again if that counts.

Mothers of Invention. Don't rule out Lol Coxhill's solo works.... he did some really cool Philip Glass like things. Mucho sax. Sun Ra. Colosseum. Traffic. Weather Report.

In early English prog band Family, Jim King was playing saxophone among others instruments like tin whistle, harmonica and piano. For example in this famous song.

How about bands that don't usually bring in saxophone but use it to great effect on occasional tracks? I'm thinking of Marillion's Berlin and IQ's Capricorn here - both tracks which wouldn't quite be as magical as they are without a well-chosen sax guest spot.
