Topic: But How Do You Really Feel? Posted: June 17 2015 at 18:17 |
With lots of time on my hands presently, I went into the "Prog Polls" lounge way back to Page 789 (the last with threads dating back to 2004). One poll that stood out for me titled simply "Phil Collins" asked those who cared to rate the man with such choices as "He’s done good things in and out of Genesis" (which got the most votes of 12) to "He ruined Genesis" (the second highest choice at 7 votes). Now I'm sure there's been several or more threads through the years concentrating on this legendary prog drummer, so I'm assuredly not delving into anything new here. What needs to be said though is that for the poll referenced, there was such a notable lack of interest as shown in the pawltry number of bloggers who responded. So I put it straightforwardly to those who care with the original question framed back in 2004: "Phil Collins: How do you feel about him?"

Love him. Not so much the Disney Phil, but a person has to keep busy.

I love to hate him.
I mean, I do not REALLY hate him. I find stupid to hate songs/albums/artists, but I do think its funny to dislike somethings and to play with it.
So, bugger off, Phill!

Meh...he's done a few cute pop diddies that are fun to hear but nothing that rates a WOW in my opinion. Did he ruin Genesis, no, Genesis ruined themselves by not being able to continue on in the manor they had when they created great art, just like my heroes ELP. I have no compunctions about admitting that. He is an excellent drummer, in my top three along with Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford. Do I miss him in the music scene, not particularly.

Exactly. One of the best IMO. A shame his creativity sputtered out when it did, but the moments that are there are wonderful.

Great drummer. Brand X should not be forgotten. He was complicit in destroying Genesis. Banks and Rutherford helped him destroy the band. If he (perhaps with Banks and Rutherford) would regain some interest in Prog and actually put out some new Prog albums, I'm sure much would be forgiven, but he/they simply aren't about to do that. He/they have shown no interest in repairing or rekindling a relationship with Prog fans.

Drummer - great. Singer - pretty good; not quite Gabriel, but a good impersonation vocally. Not a bad frontman. Composer - not sure how much writing he did for Genesis, but his solo stuff is pretty mediocre with a few gems.
My main gripe is the direction he took Genesis after the loss of Hackett, but I think the others were equally complicit so unfair to just blame him. And he actually comes across as a nice enough bloke, so it's surely impossible to hate him.

Great drummer, charismatic singer, and a great pop songwriter. Say what you will about some of his more adult-contemporary sounding material from the latter part of his solo career (a bit too soft for me), the man has an ear for hooks and IMO did some of the best pop of the 80s. I don't like every last one of his songs, but I have fond memories of his 80s music from my childhood and find it far superior to the majority of what's being produced in the mainstream these days. Seems to me that the one of the main reasons for the Phil hatred is a bit of overexposure; having had massive hits of his own and massive hits with Genesis, he seemed to be everywhere and therefore inescapable. I like most of Genesis' work up until Invisible Touch, which I consider a great pop-rock album with prog influence rather than prog proper. We Can't Dance had some good material but I find it overlong, and it seems that at that point the band was running out of steam. Still better than Calling All Stations, though.

An underrated, incredible drummer. And not just in the 1970s. His live performances with Chester Thompson on When in Rome back in 2007 showed he still had it. Not sure if he can perform like that now with his health issues over the last few years. On top of that, he was much in demand as a session drummer in the 1980s, though many artists didn't use his skill set to their advantage. His downside was his solo career. He did write some credible pop music, though much of it I find disappointing. He pretty much chose his role to be a pop music vocalist for his solo stuff. The drums took a back seat (with some exceptions). He could have unleashed all kinds of drum craziness not suited for Genesis. I can't fault him for this choice. We all have to pay the bills.

More or less my thougt, but I disagree about "few gems" as I consider a gem only "In The Air Tonight" and nothing else.

Great drummer, also after the 1970's. Great singer and frontman too. Don't like the 'poppification' of Genesis, though there are still quite some good tracks on Abacab, Genesis and Invisible Touch especially. Don't like his solo career, except for some exceptions like the songs "In The Air Tonight", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Thru These Walls", "Take Me Home", "We Said Hello Goodbye" and "Groovy Kind Of Love".

Actually I would have a few beers with him and then ask him why he f**ked up Genesis then clock him and walk out of the pub.

When Genesis went pop, I lost interest in them, and I only know Collin's music that played in the radio, which is not to my taste, so I did not pay attention then, nor I do now, to his solo stuff. He is a good musician/artist, but he went to write very simple music, intended for the mass of people, not for the ones who like to listen to interesting arrangements/orchestrations/compositions, even though he is more than capable to do so.

It is just sad that he sold out as he was an accomplished progressive musician. hard to imagine Peter Hammill or Bobby Fripp having hit singles and becoming celebrity darlings, or Chris Karrer from Amon Duul II releasing a cover version of "You Can't Hurry Love". He is a jolly chap though and seems to take all the mocking in good spirits, unlike the miserable git Tony Banks.
