probably controversial to some, but i'd say King Crimson since they don't really show off visually and try to go against the status quo of the time to this day!

Tull by far.
All the rest are pretentious to some degree: in KC's case, excruciatingly so.

Never quite thought of any of the classic prog bands as actually pretentious - the closest is Jon Anderson's whole power/pseudo-spiritual trip that fueled Tales From Topographic Oceans, which was rather pretentious but didn't even really rub off on Howe, let alone the rest of the group.

Anyone voting for ELP hasn't read the question.

most - KC/Fripp least - Yes.. silly yes... forget TFTO and they were easily the least pretentious here. They didn't have inferiotity complexes or the need to show how smart or clever they are.. like some of those groups or just how goddamned talented they were.. .like a particular one. They just made good music and left the pseudo-intellectualism or the frickin my work is modern art motif behind and just kicked ass with the music. Anderson was a flake. . not the same as pretentous.

Personally I think the Flake is the most pretentious of all the chocolate bars. I'd like to say Yes of the Fragile/CTTE era but Wakemans glittery cloak and Anderson or Howe's platform shoes put paid to that. Genesis ? Gabriel in his silly outfits is a black mark but maybe in just post the Lamb period ? Ah sod it. Nick Drake.

I don't know what pretentious really means. I guess for Genesis it means having an imagination. For VDGG it means striving for poetry. For Crimson it means being too haughty taughty, mature and sophisticated. For Yes and ELP it means giving your audience a show. I'll go with Jethro Tull up until and excluding Passion Play. It's hard to call a front man dressed as a hobo pretentious, whatever it might mean.
