Topic: Obscured By Clouds Live Posted: August 04 2015 at 17:03
I was listening to Obscured By Clouds yesterday and wondering if they played some of the tracks live (or other studio versions), because I think some extended versions would be really good. One track I find frustrating is "Wot's... Uh The Deal", the fade out when the organ solo starts, I'd really like to hear that. I think "Absolutely Curtains" (perhaps their last psychedelic track?) could be longer: when I'm getting into the mood, the annoyingly repetitive vocals appear. Do you know any "obscure" recording that you think is better than the album version?

I'd like to hear some Obscured stuff live. But given it was a soundtrack, recorded quickly as well, I don't think the band thought that highly of it. Considering they were putting the finishing touches/developing ideas to Dark Side of the Moon as well.
I love Obscured By Clouds so much that for me it's part of their "Three album streak" everyone seems to think ended with Animals. Yeah, Animals isn't bad. But it doesn't sound like a band album like Obscured By Clouds up to Wish You Were Here does.

I don't know about Floyd playing any of it (perhaps I have a vague idea of reading something about Childhood's end, but that may be nothing, really). However, I do know Gilmour played "Whot's Uh... the Deal" live on his On an Island tour, with Wright on keyboards... so that's Floyd enough for me. Plus, he did add some solo, which made the song much more satisfying to me than the original. It's available on the Live in Gdansk live album.

They did that one a few times but more regularly did only the first two songs from it. They already performed DSOTM in concert before they recorded OBC; DSOTM was their main priority at the time but they already agreed to make another soundtrack. Surprised they never performed the single "Free Four" and "Burning Bridges/Mudmen" would have made a nice mini-epic if they added a little more to it.

Oh well, I was just checking out about Whot's uh... the deal with Gilmour, and I don't find it listed on the Live in Gdansk CD... not even on the 3rd disc of the special edition. However, I do have it from that album, perhaps it was one of the songs offered for download when I bought my CD (it was actually the whole 3rd disc, plus one song... perhaps it was this one... still, it's a wonderful version).

Though it seems it is included on the extra songs from the DVD version of the tour, Remember that Night, of course you can't play it on CD or IPod unless you can rip off the sound.

I have an old tape with a 14+ minute jam of the opening 2 tunes Oscured/When You're In from a Rainbow gig in 1973 but that's all I know they performed from that album. OBC has been a weaker album for me until a couple of weeks ago when I listened and realised just how good it is

Thanks for all the information I found the three tracks you mentioned:
Amazing versions, all of them I hope Gilmour will surprise us with another OBC version on his upcoming tour, there's a lot of great tunes on that album

Absolutely Curtains had potential to be a nicely, jammed-out live favourite. Minus the 'mudmen' chanting, of course. Some stoned-out oooh's and aaah's would've been perfect In fact, only Free Four is the tune I find average - always have.

^ I'm thinking that's because it's the most 'straight-forward' track. There is some well-played bass from Rog, though. The track Stay is very pretty for a ballad. Then most everything else is quite excellent, actually. Almost on-par with Meddle.

I like to play those tracks that way too. I'm glad it's not just me
I don't remember noting that they go well together, but Mudmen is actually my favourite piece from this album. I really love the guitar work on that one. I'll try listening to the couple together again, see if I can apreciate them in a different way.

A very informative thread, no idea this material was ever performed live. I have a bootleg with 'Cymbeline' from More on it, and I thought that was the extent of their live versions of their soundtracks.

Mudmen is like an instrumental version of Burning Bridges. It's my favourite too, very spacey stuff

^ Cymbaline was a real goodie in live performance. Always loved the blissed-out jam section with Wright's Farfisa solo.
Yeah, they really need to release a live album with Cymbaline and Fat Old Sun included. They were really awsome. There's the live version of Fat Old Sun with Gilmour on his last tour, which was wonderful and sounds more polished like newer Floyd, but the live versions on the 70's had an edge that's missing.
