Topic: First Rush album? Posted: August 18 2015 at 14:33 |
I'd like to hear something from rush, seems to be a very good band. But which I have to start with? I'm sure you sophisticated all-knowing Rush fanatics!
I read their first albums were like Led Z. Now that I'm not really into the sound of them, I think a later album suits me more. Though I like when there's a lot of guitar in it and uhhh... I prefer long tracks and conceptual albums.
Any recommandations?

Start with Moving Pictures or Signals and then work backwards.
You'll be into the epics in about one more album.

A lot of guitar, long tracks and concept albums? It has to be Hemispheres (ok, it's only half conceptual) or Farewell to Kings.

I'd recommend any of these three albums -
Caress of Steel
Farewell to Kings
Permanent Waves

Agreed-- though not what I'd normally recommend to new Rushers, this is the obvious first choice.

I heard a lot of 2112 with my room mate. Later, he found in his uncle basement the original 1976 brazilian release of the album and give it to me. The cover and the album are not in such a good shape, but the history is good so I keep it.

Rush seemed to develop in three album spurts: The first LP to Caress- Zep meets Yes....more on the Graffiti-era Zep side than the Yes side, but the Yes-like epics are developing. 2112 - Hemispheres - The epics rock and the rock is epic.....and the heavy is still in the mix. Waves to Signals - Sleeker, more production, more radio-friendly....the heavy and the epics are still there but the 80s begin to creep in. Pressure to Fire - The radio side has taken over, attempts to keep up with trends influences the sound.....almost a different band than the first three (or six!) albums. That's where my interest ends.....but I've never really been that much into Rush.

I would say 2112 easily. Mainly because of the title song, the rest is hit or miss, but the title song seems to describe exactly what you want.

Hemispheres.
If you like that move onto..
A Farewell to kings 2112 Permenant Waves Moving Pictures
You may also like Caress of Steel, but that's still a bit 'Zeppy'

Long tracks + concept + "a lot of guitar" = Hemispheres Short(er) and long(ish) tracks + themes + guitar/keyboard interplay = Permanent Waves; Moving Pictures
