My personal pick would just have to be John Petrucci because he writes most of the stuff anyway

i don't think he does. musically, perhaps, but potnoy puts in his fair share lyrically too. labrie writes good lyrics, but not that often. and portnoy wrote the clever "splicing" of prog song titles/artists in the "Full Circle" section of Octavarium. that gets him something. but i almost always think the music is more important than the lyrics. so i somewhat reluctantly give petrucci my vote.

Kevin Moore is the best songwriter Dream Theater has had, sure Jordan and Derek are better players, but Kevin Moore is the ultimate Progressive Metal musician.

i'd give that honor to petrucci or portnoy. moore is good, but i don't think he's that good.

Meh...... When Derek Sherinian left Dream Theater, most of their melody was lost from their band. After Derek left, the band became JP and MP's and their sense of melody has become into massive shredding sessions. Dream Theater, I feel like is no longer a band that is based on melody. Just shred, shred, shred, shred.

1. Kevin Moore

2. Mike Portnoy

3. Derek Sherinian

4. John Petrucci

5. John Myung (if he writes any)

6. Jordan Rudess (if he writes any)

^Sherenian hasn't written much for DT, and moore only wrote two songs and some lyrics. They're all great, but 99% of stuff was written by Petrucci/Portnoy, so it would be more fair to accredit them.

you've got to admit, though: "stream of consciousness" is a very good instrumental. every time i watch them play it on live at budokan, i cannot help be be stunned. it is crafted so completely perfectly that it is beyond words. i've listened to it 100+ times and never get tired of it. in fact, i can't wait for my favorite parts to come up.

Dream Theater were the cover artist of this month's Keyboard magazine.  So here it is folks, the DT songwriting process directly from an interview with Jordan Rudess:

Honed through years of collaberation, Dream Theater's compositional process involves well-defined delegation.  "We dive into it as a group," Jordan says.  "John and I writhe the notes and harmonies, and there's a lot of interaction and back and forth between us."  Once a musical snippet is put together, it's place in one of the band's typically epic compositions.  "Mike is like a movie director," Jordan continues. "He's a great architect for our music and soon as you feed him a couple on sections, he has five choices for how the piece could be arranged: 'Okay, we can use that as the C part.  We need a pre-chorus.  Composers!  Write something else!'"

BTW, I voted for Kevin Moore.

Petrucci is too repetitive with his songwriting, and Mike Portnoy never really knows how to properly correlate what he's feeling and what the actual music is going to sound like, you know?

Although James LaBrie rarely writes Dream Theater's songs, I would have to say what he actually does contribute is the best of their stuff. More importantly, "Anna Lee," "Blind Faith," and "Disappear."

Well . . . I was unfair with accusing Petrucci of writing so badly, because a lot of his work actually does fit well with the music. And Portnoy, on occasion, can write better than other times, but he still needs improvement. If truth be told, I just enjoy LaBrie's lyrics more than the others. *shrug*

"Don't listen to me."
