Because I would never ask (and certainly never tell) the most embarrassing song. So this thread is for the runner-up. You know, the song that you only listen to when no one is around, and the reason you can't put your iPod on shuffle if anyone else is in the car.
I'll go first. The Bee Gees, New York Mining Disaster 1941. |

^ Why is that an embarrassing one? It's a really good song. There's something Beatlesque about it (probably the vocal work and the melodies). I'd put it on even if there were people around me (if they cared at all, of course).
I don't have an iPod, but I do have an iPhone. So, ... my second most embarrassing song? ... I think it depends on who is sitting next to me. Could be a metalhead/alt-rock frat-guy reprimanding me for having Steely Dan and "mullet rock" (Metallica) on my phone or ... or else. (Sorry for the horrible generalization. Just making a point.) I think it'll have to be Dream Theater's "False Awakening Suite" (but even I wouldn't listen to it).

I'm not particularly embarrassed by anything I like listening to because I don't really care what people think of the music I enjoy.

Well I attended a picnic this summer with some female friends of mine. They'd brought a big boombox for additional tunes but forgotten about MP3 devices other than their mobile phones, which obviously were far more important in their purses.
I then offered my own MP3 player as DJ. First album my friend puts on is Henry Cow's Legend. Maybe not embarrassed per se, but they sure made me feel like a strange entity - especially when they begged for new music and then desperately clicked on the Faust Tapes We ended up listening to what I personally consider.....well if not the most embarrassing then highly ironic music found on the device: Smurph Hits (which is a riveting album when you and about 8 other guys stumble into an apartment at 6 o clock in the morning after a night out on the town). |

Maybe this should be retitled "Second song others would most surprising" or something like that. I'm guessing a lot of folks will say they aren't really embarrassed by the music on their mobile devices (video might be a different story ). I love NY Mining Disaster too; I listened to a lot of those early Bee Gees songs when I was a young kid and found them to be pretty good mood music.
Anyway for me I'd say Maria McKee's "Don't Toss Us Away", written by her brother the late Bryan MacLean of the band Love. It's a simple country/folk tune but with the right vocal delivery it's quite haunting. |

agreed, very poppy but fun to sign along with, particularly when you feel low. |

it's a nice idea for a thread but I don't think anyone would be surprised by anything found on my iPod, I have some real oddities.

I don't have an iPod. Probably the only "embarassing" song on my Walkman is "Mamma Mia" but I happen to think that's a great song, so there.

When my daughter want to embarrass me she goes over to the CD rack and either pulls out the Opera Babes' Beyond Imagination or Coldplay's Parachutes. The former never does because anything that has The Flower Duet from Lakmé is never going to embarrass me, but I admit the latter invariably will. However, neither of those were ever on my iPod or my current 500Mb Archos. Scanning through my iTunes list the only ones that makes me wince are Rondó Veneziano's Greatest Hits (of which they had none as far as I can tell) and Impellitteri's Screaming Symphony (which is how it makes me feel after listening to it).

is lack of iPodness a matter of principle? I travel too much to do without one.
