It's really hard for me to say. 1978 was the first year I really got hooked on prog. And supposedly by then punk had killed prog, but that is bullcrap. I saw a lot of great concerts those years. Granted prog was going too far into commercialism. In 1980 I got to meet Genesis at a record signing event when they were on the Duke tour. Got signatures of the second class Genesis citizens...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Oh, ye of little faith. How will you ever get into prog heaven?
Prog was deader than a doornail by the end of 1980 until it was resurrected by Genesis' only begotten son Marillion 3 years later and thus saving the world from listening to utter crap.
Say three Hail Gabriels for penance!
I know all the words to Gates of Delirium. I hear there's a special circle in prog heaven for the likes of us.

Grumpy old man warning! Prog was dead by 1980.
Some of us might have enjoyed the year anyway....
Can we not say "dead"? Perhaps "somewhat less robust" instead?
Exactly. If prog was dead by '80, it would not be alive today. But the period from 1979 to the mid-eighties (or maybe somewhat later) were relatively barren years for prog.

1980. But you could certainly see that change was in effect with a new sound for Genesis, Talking Heads, and Yes. Am I one of the only few who really enjoy Gradually Going Tornado with Jeff Berlin's vocals?
