Any year of the 70's beats any year of the 80's. 1980 is a good year though.

It's really hard for me to say.  1978 was the first year I really got hooked on prog.  And supposedly by then punk had killed prog, but that is bullcrap.  I saw a lot of great concerts those years.  Granted prog was going too far into commercialism.  In 1980 I got to meet Genesis at a record signing event when they were on the Duke tour.  Got signatures of the second class Genesis citizens...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

...more reasons for my 1980-vote. Almost as amazing as 1981:

Art Zoyd - Génération sans futur
The John Renbourn Group - The Enchanted Garden
Noa - Noa
Rahmann - Rahmann
Abus Dangereux - Le Quatrième Mouvement
Art Fleury - I Luoghi Del Potere
The Residents - Commercial Album
Eskaton - Ardeur
Julverne - À Neuf
Present - Triskaidékaphobie
Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band - Doc at the Radar Station

...and that's just the prog(+related) albums!

Prog was deader than a doornail by the end of 1980 until it was resurrected by Genesis' only begotten son Marillion 3 years later  and thus saving the world from listening to utter crap.

I know all the words to Gates of Delirium.  I hear there's a special circle in prog heaven for the likes of us.

Some of us might have enjoyed the year anyway....

Can we not say "dead"?  Perhaps "somewhat less robust" instead?

Exactly. If prog was dead by '80, it would not be alive today. But the period from 1979 to the mid-eighties (or maybe somewhat later) were relatively barren years for prog.

1980.  But you could certainly see that change was in effect with a new sound for Genesis, Talking Heads, and Yes.  Am I one of the only few who really enjoy Gradually Going Tornado with Jeff Berlin's vocals?

If not, can I say 1980 because that's the year we saw The Wall together (at Earl's Court)?

I love 1980 and that was the year I met my wife.
I find this close as well but 1980 is deeper with fav albums so that's what I voted for.
My top five for 1979 were albums by Vortex, Laurent Thibault, Carnascilia, Gunter Schikert and Igra Stoklenih.
My top five for 1980 were albums by Rush, Rahmann, Art Zoyd, Present and Hawkwind.
By the way I have many non-Prog favs from 1980 as well.
