Supper's Ready for me. It flows perfectly from beginning to end, each moment really wonderful, while Plague is really wonderful for the first half of the song, but then becomes too chaotic, or else just not interesting enough. I do love Peter Hammill (though he does has his "this is too much" moments), and this song is one of the great examples of his vocal genius... it sounds like it's two different people singing at the beginning.

I do like the Second's Out version a lot too, and in many parts I think it's better than the original (I have always liked Phil's vocals better... or almost always). But I even the "comic section" is perfect for me on the original song, while on the Seconds Out version it is mostly ruined, and that breaks the flow of perfection from the studio version. Plus, I do miss the flute a bit... not so much as I expected to miss it (since it was adequatley replaced by Banks), but it's still better to have real flute.

Supper's Ready by 3 stars or more (admitted, it is my overall favourite prog track). A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers was the first proof of VdGG's inability to keep their epics at level with their 6-13 minute tracks.

Two of my top four all- time favourite songs here....
Not a matter of preference here... but..ok.. Supper's Ready is the obvious winner here..like many its my first love too..Plague on the other hand demands more patience and experience...its a tumultuous journey...you wud never fall in love with this gem in first listen...but trust me..you wud never forget the day it finally hits you...final 5-6 minutes to me is almost a religious experience.
All my love and admiration and vote for the GENIUS called Hammill.

Foxtrot gets my vote. A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers is nice, but the absence of guitar causes me difficulty.

Yeah, I don't mind Peter Hammil's voice so much. It does sound like two different people at the beginning. It reminds me of Captain Beefhart.

Supper's Ready is my second favorite epic after Echoes (but the Pompeii version, I even prefer it over Echoes if we're talking about studio versions).

Plague is great too, but below Close to the Edge, Thick as a Brick 1, Karn Evil 9 and a couple of others. Still in my TOP 10 though.
I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

I have never missed the guitar with VDGG, the sax and keyboards take the melody just nicely. And David Jackson can do all the heavier stuff you might want to do with a guitar too.

Plague, hands down. Actually "Supper's Ready" was inspired by it.
