I always think more in terms of albums. There are many bands that have produced some of my favorite albums, but then I either haven't heard much of their other material or don't like their other material. When I say I like a band, it may only mean that band in their "heyday," so it's difficult to come up with bands that I like consistently through their careers. Some bands I may like consistently, but not as much as some other bands. And are bands with one or two album careers comparable to ones with extensive careers? I dunno. But I've tried to make a list with a good intersection of the two. Also, I'm excluding classical.

Sonic Youth
Led Zeppelin
Fugazi
Unwound
My Bloody Valentine
Wilco
Mission of Burma
Paul Simon
The Beatles
The Cure
Joy Division

I feel like this has been done a bunch of times over the years.  It would be interesting to go back and see how some of the old-timers lists have changed (I'm sure mine has).

Anyway for now I'll say (in no particular order)

- Cranberries
- Rocio Durcal
- Maria McKee
- R.E.M.
- Violent Femmes
- Concrete Blonde
- the Go-Gos
- Rod Stewart (before he became a bitter old woman)
- Johnny Cash
- Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris

This is impossible - mostly because my faves change all the time.

Today the list looks like this:

The Stooges
The Future Sound Of London
David Bowie
Pharoah Sanders
Wu-Tang Clan (though mostly side-projects from Wu members)
The Doors
Funkadelic
Sun Ra
Magazine
Gasolin

Hmm, I sense another thread in the offing.

Personally, when I rank my favorite bands I consider their entire oeuvre. As a side effect, Genesis would never be in my Top 10/20/etc list being they produced albums after Wind & Wuthering. I can forgive a dud or two if their discog is a) huge and/or b) there are many 5 star albums involved. Perhaps that's unfair, but that seems the easiest way to do it (for me).

I'm getting the same thing with you for some of mine, like Cake and TMBG. Couldn't live without Comfort Eagle or Flood but I only like a couple of things from the rest of their discography. It also happens with me in songs and artists too. For example, Thick As A Brick is my favourite song of all time. Nothing even comes close. It's also my third favourite album of all time. But yet, aside from Aqualung and a little bit of HH, i couldn't dig the rest. But yet I'm always inclined to put them on my list of favourite artists because of one song. Struggles.

Indeed. Television's Marquee Moon is one of my favorites, but I couldn't put them on my list for just one album. On the other hand, And Also the Trees, the Fall, and Boris have had long runs without a single bad album that I've heard, yet their albums may mean less to me than some others by one-great-album bands. I also didn't include more recent bands or ones that maybe are my favorites now, but haven't quite received a tenure. My list was very safe.

Hmm...Ayler was a big miss for me. He totally deserves to be on my list.

Asmuch as I love Bailey, his solo discog has too much solo guitar for me to rate it too highly. But he has produced some great stuff. Good suggestions all. Thumbs Up
