As a birthday gift to Guigo, I'am going to put under PA avaliation the album Paebiru, from Zeca Ramalho & Lula Cortês to psychdelic or folk.

See, there is a great difficulty in analyse this one. Its psychdelic or it is folk? In Brazil this album by Zeca Ramalho & Lula Cortês is called Psychdelic Folk. So... there. I'll let you guys decide, because for me, both are equally representative.

Paebiru is a landmark for the psychdelic folk of the northeastern region in Brazil. Since we had from the early seventies, Ave Sangria, Alceu Valença, Lula Cortes, Lailson (this last two made the Satwa together), Geraldo Azevedo and Zé da Flauta all working in different projects and respective solo carries, in Paebiru we have ALL THIS ARTISTS WORKING TOGETHER.

The album was released in 1975, but since the original tapes were lost in a flood, and several copies of the original also, this is one of the rarest records to find in Brazil, with a good copy worthing more than a thousand Reais (our currency). Aside from this curiosity, Paebiru is actually a nature and dvine concept album, since the idea came from the Ingá Stone in Brazil and its indigenous spirits - as a consequence the double LP has its four sides in thematic (Earth, Wind, Water and Fire) and the instruments chosed to play in each side corresponds the elements. I'll look for the complete data of the record, the artists, who played what and will provide the bio from the album (as always), if accepted.

The youtube video with the complete record are above. You can read the AllMusic review here and the Wikipedia english page here.

PS: Please, do consideer that I have putted in appreciation the groups El Efecto and Pão com Manteiga and the album Tropicália ou Panes et Circenses; also, the page Satwa still has to be changed to Lula Côrtes & Lailson, as, for example, AllMusic has made.

I guess thats it. Enjoy the music and cheers! Beer

It's funny because for some reason I thought they were already on the website. I'd think they'd go under psychedelic. Because even though the instrumentation is acoustic, it's quite experimental... but here it'd fit more under "folk", because the instrumentation is a defining trait that doesn't quite fit under the "rock" in "psychedelic/space rock"... or does it? I have never checked that section tbh

A big thanks to Gustavo for remembering me and also my support to add "Paebiru" to the Archives.

Actually IMHO this album should be here since the beginning and I recognize that it was my fault for not suggesting it before.

It's not Psych. Probably Prog Folk or Eclectic.

I'm in China this week with terrible internet access but I posted this link to the Prog Folk team thread to get it some attention.  If I can find a decent enough connection somewhere to connect to VPN so I can get to youTube I'll have a listen myself.

This is absolutely stunning ...ShockedClapStarStarStarStarStarStarStar

And indeed, it's got ts place on PA. We"re studying it in PF (it's got my vote anyways), but it's so much more than prog folk... Psych could be just as justified

Glad you liked it, Sean. Reallym am. Paebiru is that kind of album that only happen once and defies genres boundaries. Nice to see that the music still found interesting reactions. Smile

Gustavo,

Looks like we approved this back in March for Prog Folk.  The general consensus was it was a better fit for Psych but it appears you tried that already and they felt otherwise.  Somehow it slipped through the cracks after that.

Anyway I assume your proposal is to add Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho as the act and this as their only album.  I don't think it makes sense to add any other albums where either of them collaborated with someone else, or any of their solo albums unless they are approved apart from this based on their solo work.

You or Guigo are welcome to add this if you'd like.  If you're prefer we do it I'm okay with that but am just coming off almost two months of international travel so it is going to be a while before I'm caught up and I think Hugues and Ken both have backlogs as well.

Regards,

Bob

The idea is to add Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho, with Paebiru as their only work, correct. I dont think I mentioned adding other albums with other colaborations...

We can, as members, add the albums, but not the pages, correct? I'll add the album as soon the page is on.

Thanks, Bob.

Thanks, Bob.

My suggestion:
I'd add the album under Lula Cortes since he had several works alone and with a lot of collaborators.

Here's the discography of Lula Cortes (1949-2011).

  • A Mística do Dinheiro (Rozenblit, nunca lançado)
  • BOM SHANKAR BOLENATH (Instrumental, Lula Côrtes e Jarbas Mariz)
  • O Pirata (gravado em São Paulo, também nunca lançado)
  • O Gosto Novo da Vida (Ariola, 1980)
  • Lula Cortes & Má Companhia (1997).
  • Lula Cortes & Má Companhia - A Vida Não é Sopa (2006) <Sopa Diário>

Lula Cortes is certainly a prog-rock dude. Here's his 1st album, Satwa:

I think a good approach is to rename the Satwa 'band' entry to be just Lula Côrtes, then you can add any of the collaborations or solo albums including Paebiru.

One problem, Satwa is listed as Indo/Raga.  If you're okay with this solution I can check with whoever is running that group these days to confirm we can switch him to Prog Folk.

Fully OK, Bob. Thumbs Up

Anyway, IMO 'Satwa' has tints of indo/raga but the Brazilian folk part dominates the album.
