Hey.

Relatively long-time reader here, long-time enough to finally register.

I'm into the instrumental and more intense side of prog (although definitely stopping shy of metal). I don't really like gentle moodsetting.

I'm willing to give every album a chance that's rated 4+ on PA; life's too short to be indiscriminate with albums below that without a specific recommendation, sadly.

My prog-ression has been typical: from KC/Yes/Genesis (carefully avoiding Pink Floyd), finding lesser-known '70s' albums such as First Utterance or (Hermann) Szobel (who must find itself on PA, by the way) on the way, eventually coming to fusion and avant-garde (right?) of which my recent favourites are Niacin, Miriodor, and Tipographica.

Have a nice day.

Welcome and great to see a fellow Tipographica fan here! I love 'em. Tracking the albums down can be a task though (I've been into them for years and still only have three out of four).

You may already know them, but if not you could check out Unbeltipo and Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden - which both have ex-Tipographica players and put out similarly chewy stuff. I swear by them both.

Thank you. I respect Japanese rock. Unfortunately, when I was recommended Kōenjihyakkei's Angherr Shisspa once as a result of mentioning Magma's MDK, the vocals were a bit too much for me. But then, it is zeuhl.

Your suggestions remind me that there are worthwhile albums/artists even in the 1-5 PA ratings range. I think PA's main search disallows searching for albums with very few (~10?) ratings, which means that if albums are weighed with respect to # of ratings, then rare albums would be at the end of the result list in regular searches. But there are 'your obscure gems' lists here on the forums for that.
