Topic: Perfect length of a Dream Theater song? Posted: February 03 2016 at 15:02 |
I just realized that most of my favorite DT compositions are between 11-15 minutes long. The shorter tracks lack the magic that this band can achieve in a longer track time while longer tracks (15+ minutes) usually tend to contain too much filler. That's just my opinion and it would be interesting to see what you guys think!

Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

Not sure... as long as it needs to be, I guess. From 6 minutes and over. Though I guess most of my favourite ones would be among 10 and 15 minutes too... but that's mostly because they don't have as many 15 min + epic songs... and that's just right, how many such long songs can a band make before becoming tedious? However, my favourite DT song is one of this epics, Octavarium, and I do like most of their 15 min + epics (if not all of them, I would have to check).

Song length is irrelevant; short or long, as long as I enjoy it, it's great.

This.
It doesn't matter if it is Wait For Sleep or A Change Of Seasons. :)

Either that, or 30 minutes long...with the volume off. So you can read or watch TV without annoyance.

It doesn't matter if it is Wait For Sleep or A Change Of Seasons. :) | I do love "Wait for Sleep", but I do wish it were longer and developed more (though we have a bit more of it on "Learning to Live"). A Change of Seasons definitley doesn't leave me feeling like I need more of it. If anything, perhaps it's got just a little bit excess of instrumental show-off. However, something like Octavarium has absolutley no moment I would depart with.

Going with 6-10 minutes. It's no coincidence that I&W and Awake are my favourite albums of theirs. Beyond that length, they get progressively unwieldy for my tastes.

I agree with you two on the idea that song length isn't the most important issue when it comes to music. I'm just exploring an idea that I recently realized for myself (=most of my favorite DT tracks are between 10-15 minutes) and thus is interested in whether anyone else has a similar preference.

Thank you everyone who particupated in the poll. Even if the results could be considered very statistically biased, I still think that it managed to support the notion that songs between 6-15 minutes are preferred among DT fans.
