Today I heard BBC radio 4 roll out their usual nonsense regarding Progressive rock.. The subject was the influence that the poetry and art of William Blake has had on 'rock music'.. some nondescript talking head from the music media was rolled out to discuss Bob Dylan, Patty Smith and the Libertines.. and Led Zeppelin did get a mention. No mention of the doubtless and deep influence the art and poetry of Blake has had on Progressive Rock.. there are the very obvious such as 'Jerusalem' by ELP and 'Tyger' by Tangerine Dream but lets hear it for one of Albion's most visionary poets of all time and how his progressive art, poetry and politics have influenced great music of the 60's 70's and beyond..

To start, his concept of 'Albion', an alternative England (and/or state of mind) is reflected in Roy Harpers 'One of those days in England'..

Visionary by Gordon Giltrap is a beautiful interpretation of some of Blake's work.

Also, Grave New World's album cover is a painting by Blake (alternatively known as Albion Rose or Glad Day)

Il Trono dei Ricordi - same (entire lp is Blake though you'd be hard-pressed to know it since its in Italian and the vocals are recorded ABYSMALLY

Tim Blake's New Jerusalem is based on the same William Blake poem, And did those feet in ancient time, that was adapted in Sir Hubert Parry's anthem Jerusalem, the one covered by ELP.

Tim Blakes New Jerusalem!! Great lp!! And of course Sir Hubert's Anthem 'Jerusalem' was adopted by and is sung at every 'Women's institute' meeting (Hence 'Jam and Jerusalem') in the UK (and around the world? does the WI exist in other countries??)

My favourite band, Art Zoyd have an album called Le Mariage du Ciel et de l'Enfer. It's the score for a ballet based on William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

Love those David Axelrod albums by the way.

Stretching it a bit, or a lot, but also from Jeruselem, "Bring me my Chariot of Fire". The film name Chariots of Fire was inspired by that line from the Blake poem and Vangelis who has made prog albums even though this isn't one of them did the soundtrack for Chariots of Fire. Rowan Atkinson did a comedic act using the Vangelis Chariots of Fire music at the London Olympics, and he is famous for the bungling Mr. Bean, which, of course, brings us to Mr. Bungle. Mr. Bungle did a song called my Ass on Fire which is what happens when one tries to sit on a chariot afire.

Roy Batty's line, "Fiery the angels fell" from Blade Runner - also scored by Vangelis - is a variation on a Blake poem as well.
