Yeah, I know about the Buzzcocks and the original punks who began to incorporate pop, but from the 90s and on and particularly in the 00s, pop punk was a genre that drew ire from many music fans. But are there any pop punk bands from the last 25 years or so that were/are good, even great? Or has it always been the edgy teen version of the boyband?

^Offspring didn't become pop-punk until after "Smash". Their debut is one of the best punk albums I've ever heard.
The only pop-punk band I've ever enjoyed is Green Day, but they lost their way after "American Idiot" imo.

I actually love Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown. More pop than punk, but soooo catchy and energetic. I like it better than their 90s output. Check out the song East Jesus Nowhere. |

More heavy prog, please!

Other than the previously mentioned Buzzcocks and Green Day, Joyce Manor is pretty good.

Arctic Monkeys
Sophisticated punk pop (IMHO). Intelligent lyrics, great tunes and an urban punk attitude. I love them. Alex Turner is a genius. |

I don't know if you could call Inner City Unit "pop punk", but punk they definitely are. I would call them "acid punk". here some examples:

You should check out Liars' Mess from 2014. One of the best albums fitting your description.
Deliberately ugly pop with a "dance-punk" thing going on. I'm not sure I'd call Green Day a punk band - not even with the pop sticker in front of it.....and I practically grew up with Dookie. Emo teen rock is more like it. |

Green Day is more rock than punk for me, despite everyone calling them punk (same applies to The Clash). As it was already mentioned, The Offspring is the obvious call. I'd say Ramones are pretty much pop-punk too, many of their songs are very poppy with catchy choruses and repetitive melodies.

the drummer in No Doubt is quite good also, and No Doubt as a band is a good starting point, like Tragic Kingdom.

I actually am putting out a band recently that's sort of a throwback to older stuff (Descendents/ALL, Lookout! Records). You might dig 'em.
Here's their EP cover: Free Download: Take a listen and let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Never was into 'punk' ( I did have some Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc...).....but always liked these guys..more pop than punk but it has that feel imo....good band and of course Hitchcock went on to some fame on his own.

The Police were pawned off as a punk band when they first came to the US......pop-punk would have been a better moniker. The Soft Boys! Their very early stuff was loud pop......more Stonesy than Pistols, but they were lumped together as punk. Even Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and - gasp - Joe Jackson were put into the punk pile when they first broke into the US market. Punk came so late to the US that it was basically dead before it arrived.
