Topic: A Rush Song vs. A Genesis Song Posted: March 15 2016 at 09:45 |
Both songs are powerful with a sense of space and momentum to mirror the allegorical subject matter of the lyrics. This creates interesting musical tensions (primarily through variegated middle sections). So, which one is most effective?

Tom Sawyer is a mega-hit whilst 'Motherlode is merely an also-ran.

Gotta be Tom Sawyer!
Behind Deep in the motherlode is a fantastic idea which should have been developed a little more in my opinion. It was a great concert opener though (as was Tom Sawyer of course)

I'm probably the wrong person to answer the question in the poll.

Deep in the Motherlode is one of the five songs that I like from ATTWT. But it is not a match for Tom Sawyer.

I don't understand the poll---one is an arena rock anthem hit---and the other is just a Genesis song.

I found this was the case with a lot of ATTWT. They were still a prog rock band but the pieces felt kind of truncated to me. Maybe it should have been a 2 LP set! Tom Sawyer is a perfect piece so I voted for Deep In The Motherlode - it has very subtle moments while Tom Sawyer has more hooks than a fishing fleet giving it that more immediate appeal.

If you had picked a Gabriel/Hackett-era prog song, this would be no contest.

I picked the songs because they were comparable - there isn't anything similar in the Gabriel/Hackett canon (possibly Firth of Fifth but that is very different in construction). The pairing was inspired by listening to the Archives live version of 'Motherlode' when the similarity struck me - in terms of allegorical context; and distance.

Deep in the Motherload is a great song. One of the few I truly like off that album but yeah no contest with the modern day warrior
