Topic: Best of less than stellar albums: MLOR (1987) Posted: June 28 2016 at 21:58 |
Momentary Lapse of Reason is actually one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums, and I do prefer it over The Final Cut. I know the overbearing pop-influences of Gilmour kind of got under some people's skin. I do love practically every song from the album, give probably one or two.

I guess "Sorrow", if only for the live versions.

^ Same. This album was their most mechanical and in many ways most gloomy (and that's saying a lot for PF ). You'd think Gilmour the most darkly cynical man in the world.

It's very interesting to hear some of the story behind the experimentation by Gilmour, specifically A New Machine. The sound manipulation on it and the entire album is great.

I really like this album, but if I had to pick favorites I'd choose A New Machine Parts 1 and 2. It's short, but evokes so much in that short time.

"One Slip" had enough of a pop hook that should of been the lead single from AMLOR instead if the even longer co-credits of Learning To Fly. The first side is quite presentable, but the second side can't support Sorrow!

A true 'product' of the 80's. Always, for me, a toss-up between Yet Another Movie (and the 7/4 interlude Round and Around) and the long cut Sorrow. Both much better in live performance. A solid 3 star album, MLOR. I still have a near-pristine vinyl from the first-day issue here in Australia, where I took a day off school (with my Mother's approval) to go and by it !! ..........Gilmour solo or true Floyd album........ who cares, still a very pleasant and enjoyable album.

I agree with this (except for one single point: Round and Round is 5/4) and I feel the same way. Today I vote for Yet Another Movie.

Honestly I don't like this album. (IMO) There are 2-3 songs in this album that better than others and I choose between them : "Sorrow".

Not my fave Floyd album but not as bad as most people tend to consider it...One Slip is the winner. Great song and cool lyrics...

I'd probably say One Slip too, minus the slightly annoying opening.

I prefer the Phil Manzanera Floyd of "One Slip".
This album is so interesting that nobody realizes the supergroup type line-up for playing and composition.
Anthony Moore from Slapp Happy wrote a lot of this album. Phil Manzanera did one track. Bob Ezrin wrote some. and Patrick Leonard, of Madonna and Kevin Gilbert's Toy Matinee fame, wrote quite a few.
Session musicians contained a lot of Supertramp's back up artists.
This album IS prog but about as un-pink floyd as a pink floyd album could be. Either way, I liked it (probably because most of the writing had little to do with Pink Floyd). (Now watch as the Pink Floyd purists tear me a new one for bringing this up).

I didn't expect so much love for "One Slip". As for me, my favourites are "On the Turning Away" and "Yet Another Movie", still, I like them better on "Delicate Sound of Thunder". Since I can almost not enjoy the studio version of YAM because I would rather be listening to the live one, I'll be going with OTTA.
