Sahara by Camel (1999)

A song that seems to be liked by those familiar with it but a song rarely mentioned amongst the great Camel tracks or prog instrumentals?

How do you rate it?

It's a wonderful track off a terrific album!

It's one of those situations where it falls outside the `classic period' of the group that everyone knows and loves and have overdosed on so much over the years, yet those who explore the (often worthwhile) later releases of these kind of bands know there's still special moments to be found here and there.

Rajaz is the best Camel album imo, I love the chilled pacing. Set to a Camel's trot apparently. TBH I feel Camel's strongest period was their last 4 albums, it's strange not many give recognition to their 1991-2002 period.

The track Sahara reminds me very much of Floyd's careful with that Axe Eugene. Chilled out with an edgy bit in the middle.

A very nice track from a solid album; very Satriani-esque at time, I find. An 8 for me.

One of my favorite Camel tracks. Excellent guitar work, accompanied by fantastic instrumentation.

Pretty good considering the, to me at least, sterile production job. Latter day Camel tends to be on the old-man-watching-the-sea side of things, but in this case it rather works. 6 for me. Nothing outstanding though.

Solid and well-played, but not outstanding. I agree with Guldbamsen on this one. This is the work of a team of seniors who know how to play, but cannot reach the Champions League. 6.5/10 rounded down.

Had it been released in the 20s, Rajaz would be the album of the century.

I always get a sense of a Satriani influence when listening to this beautiful latter Camel track.

Agree. Latter day Camel is mostly just dull, this album makes me feel sad actually. So does "Harbour of Tears" from 1996 but it´s meant to be do that (perhaps) ´cos Latimer wrote it in memory of his father who had died just recently ? It´s a very emotional album but doesn´t make me too sad, much better than "Rajaz" in everything really, but nothing really outstanding either for me.
You may see a smile on Tony Banks´ face but that´s unlikely.

7.5 rounded to 8. My favourite on Rajaz (which itself isn't actually among my Camel favourite albums).  Good authentic heartfelt music, great guitar, but nothing all too exciting.
