Utopian Trap is a progressive metal band from San Francisco Bay Area. The band morphed from a project called Fiction, founded in 2005 by their guitarists Chandra and Vinod. In the early days they started writing songs and actively looking for band members. Hard hitting versatile drummer Jai came on board in 2007. Through various connections, Anand(vocals) and Sid(bass, backup vocals) were invited to join the band in late 2008 to start working on the debut album. The metal project Fiction had now become Utopian Trap. The band spent most of 2009 recording and producing the album Fiction Fades Into Reality. While rooted in traditional heavy metal, this album delves into technical, thrash and progressive territories. This complex debut CD is packed with heavy, technical and addictive riffs, explosive and intelligent rhythms, powerful vocals, and deep and thoughtful lyrics. The album has received rave reviews online and has been featured on metal podcasts and radio stations across the globe. Accomplished bassist/keyboardist Farhan joined Utopian Trap in December 2010. Since their debut CD release, the band has been gigging, writing new music. Multiple lineup changes delayed the writing/recording process, but the long awaited second studio album, The Human Price, is ready for a release on July 13th, 2016. Doesn't seem to have been evaluated as yet. Svetonio added them to progfreak at the time of the second album's release: http://progfreak.com/Utopian-Trap-166823.html, but no PA tab currently exists. The latest album has a bit of a Geoff Tate/Queensryche feel about it to these ears. It's metal for sure, with varying degrees of progginess - but definitely worth an eval methinks.
