I'm at it but it's tough. I may get it done this weekend but I have to do much work and if I don't finish it by late Sunday, I won't be able to make the deadline.

Fantastic list overall (although I definitely disagree with that top two).

In completely unrelated news, I might have to start strategically voting just to make sure a certain track rhyming with "carcass" or that one about the absence of stars don't end up too high.

Perhaps every voter gets a veto for a single song of their choice? LOL

Joking of course, please don't hurt me...

Well those two are seen as real masterpieces by almost everyone around here, and you can defenitely hear that they worked real hard to compose and record these pieces. That's why it also ends up very high in my list.
We could need some fresh opinion tho WinkLOL

I can extend the deadline to the end of next weekend (final deadline for submissions would be Monday, August 29th as opposed to Friday, August 26th).

Thoughts?

OK, here we are.
This was fun but also tough. I had some struggles with the idea of "prog songs"... my intuition for "songs" rather jumps on something melody driven and often pretty short. And then when listening to music I generally don't care much about whether something is "Prog" or not, so I included everything that I think is listed on PA and if this is not prog enough for someone tough luck.

I have severe difficulties comparing a nice little song like Army Dreamers with an epic such as Close to the Edge, let alone something where neither anybody sings on nor which has a melody such as Rubycon, but then of course who can tell where the boundary should be? So I came up with this compromise that includes bigger and even instrumental thingies of very limited melodic appeal, but is probably somewhat biased in favour of the "real songs" which may or may not be seen as prog regardless of who did them,
Here we go. (No problem about extending the deadline by the way, despite the fact that I tried hard to make it.)

Fantastic list, Lewian! Thank you for posting; there were actually a few tracks in yours that I had forgotten about that I may go back and edit into my own list.

I'd love to go back through my list, rearranging and adding where necessary, but I'm bound to hate the result just as much. I think I ended up not allowing more than three or four songs per album, just so the list wouldn't get flooded by favorite albums of mine with 8+ tracks, like 8 or 9 tracks from The Dreaming (Kate Bush) alone. An album list would probably be less maddening overall, this is just cruel. Wink

If you want to make any changes, just go for it! And don't worry about over-representing certain albums; there were a few that I went a little overboard with.

And as for an album list...just stay tuned. Cool

My list will be definite from now, so if you feel like it, you can already use it, Kevin. Hope that makes the work spread a little more Thumbs Up

That's it - I give upDead Too many tunes to count...that I've left out because my brain won't work and I just happen to be a long ways from my record collection (It's currently housed at my aunt's place).

Thanks, Pascal. You may want to make just one more edit, though; you have Boys In The Band listed at 23 and 55. I have it marked down for 23 right now, so if you want to replace 55 with something else, feel free. I noticed that you used to have Stairway to Heaven at 55 but evidently you replaced it; should I bring it back?

You've got my admiration for this for sure. Personally I found that best songs cluster much stronger than best albums and the number of artists in my list with one entry only is pretty small. There were many more in my albums list.

I realise it even takes me some time to understand my own list. David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees is a winner here with 5 entries and deservedly so, this is one stunning album full of additive and unique songs (not sure whether I mentioned him in any discussion in the forum yet, although the album of course appears on my album list - neither have I seen him mentioned in any recent discussion but he is listed, of course), followed by Discipline and The Dreaming with 4 each. Then I have the whole of Close to the Edge listed, hell, I didn't even think I'm a fan of that album. I don't play it often but when I do I just love all of it to pieces. Further albums that appear in full are Thick as a Brick, Rubycon and Tangram, but they have an easier job as they qualify as 1-2 songs.
Oh, and Kate Bush appears with songs from 7 albums, this is probably head and shoulders above the others. When it comes to songs, she's the queen.

I have nothing to do today, so I looked at my own list, and calculated that 40% of my list is comprised of 13 different groups, each with at least 5 tracks. This is actually a lot better than I was expecting. As follows:
Gentle Giant: 12
Pink Floyd: 11
Van Der Graaf Generator: 9
King Crimson: 8
Camel: 8
Genesis: 7 (this feels too high)
Kate Bush: 6
Henry Cow: 6
Tangerine Dream: 6
Yes: 5 (this feels too low)
This Heat: 5
Earth: 5
David Bowie: 5

Only two albums (with multiple tracks) are represented in their entirety (Godbluff's 4 tracks and Earth 2's 3) and the album with the most tracks was Kate Bush's The Dreaming with a whopping 6. Tangerine Dream had the most diversity, with 6 tracks across 5 different albums (David Bowie had five tracks across 4 albums). Pink Floyd had the most album representation with 7, but I've listened to more Floyd than any other prog group, and the Floyd songs were typically lower on the list.

I like statistics...

Well, I think my list is now officially done. There are songs that probably got left out that shouldn't of. Anyways, I'm pretty happy with it so you now start counting it if you want.
