And when ELP gets ranked in the highest artists, I will be there. And when Red is among the highest albums, I will be there. And in all seriousness, this has been great fun. I'm never genuinely bothered by other people's opinions, and I'm thankful that you've done this.

I was wondering if the list would look any different if we were allowed non-prog songs, but I decided probably not, since most of us would have just chosen random non-prog that no one else listened to. At best, maybe some jazz or classic rock would be added to the lower echelons.

Just letting you know I would gladly read a post with your reasonings behind the hatred (with a too big word, indeed) towards ELP and Red.

No worries. Handshake

After all, what fun would this site be if not for the endless complaining and unnecessary elitism?

That's an interesting thought about if non-prog songs were included. I'm sure that Micky and I would have some Allman Brothers numbers in common, so they might have made it into the top 300. Other than that I can't really think of any non-prog artists that have enough united support among the people who posted lists this time around.

I've just edited my original post on page 1 to include the whole top 300, for those of you who don't want to read through 8 pages of scattered entries to browse the whole thing.

Red and Nursery Cryme have higher track average scores than Godbluff?! Good to see Harold the motherf***ing Barrel contributes to a higher average than Arrow LOL (Full disclosure: I've always kind of liked Harold the Barrel for no reason that I can discern)

Please lodge this as mechanicalflattery official complaint #381

Also how the heck does Genesis have 50 separate songs that were chosen by people? Trespass through The Lamb is only 50 songs, plus however much Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering have (maybe one or two from And Then There Were Three). Surely no one's voting for Harlequin or More Fool Me or Time Table or half of The Lamb (I did place the sole vote for The Waiting Room), so...

There's #382

Much thanks to Magnum Vaeltaja for all the work putting these lists together! Clap

Do it again next year perhaps?  Now that its started, it will give time for participants to make some thoughtful changes/additions to their lists, and hopefully get some more participants.

In the month since making my list, I've already though of several modifications/additions esp. some bands/tracks that I haven't had enough time to really absorb yet, but that I sense really oughta be on there (including tracks from: Yezda Urfa; Steven Wilson--Hand Cannot Erase; David Axelrod; Andre Fertier's Clivage; Bachdenkel; The Mars Volta--Frances The Mute; Anglagard--Viljans Oga; Triumvirat; Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso--Darwin!; Area--Arbeit Macht Frei; Eros, Dun; Amon Duul; Kayo Dot; Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come; as well as more tracks from the well-known bands already on the list).

Rush seems to have been the only well represented 'Heavy Prog' band. Other bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, and The Mars Volta are spottily scattered through some peoples' lists, but not well represented overall. It would be nice if at least a couple of prog metal-heads would participate to to represent heavy and Metal prog a little better!

yeah man... great job putting this together.  I know just how much work that is. Same you didn't get more participation.. though the results at the top surely would have been the same. What was interesting were the choices outside the 'usual suspects'. Nice to see some actually like prog rock that doesn't put you to sleep or bore one senseless hahaha

stay tuned for the 3rd installment of my little bundles of joys unleashed upon the forum. The PA's battle of the songs sponsored by whatever porn site pays me the most... I dropped Viagra after they gave me teh shaft after the Battle of the Albums contest.

What you lacked for excitement and eclecticism here.. you'll get with that contest. ClapLOL

We had studio albums and songs. What's missing is a poll of live albums. Unfortunately this is not to say that I'd volunteer for running it (but certainly I'd take part)... just saying... time and again I come across prog bands of which I really love a live album most, but they never count here.

yeah live albums are the ... ummmm.. .red headed stepchildren of PA's contests aren't they...LOL

ELP would dominate that though... or would on any normal prog forum not infested with fans of limp dick prog... they probably did have the two greatest live prog albums.. not surprisingly since they were considered one of the best live acts in rock.. bar none.. of the 70's.. interesting topic or contest there to be had.
