Our classic rock station had "double shots" in the 80s where you could phone in a couple favorites from a band and get them played back to back.  For this poll I paired songs from the same album.  Smile

One Slip/Turning Away, good combo.

Weak selection.... I'll go for Genesis, I guess. The Yes pair are ok too.

All of these are good, but it is not hard to give my vote to Rush here.

^ I wouldn't say horrific, in fact quite decent, the problem is that their albums are quite uneven.

I remember at the time that despite their stellar line-ups, my mates and I were deeply disappointed with these bands.  It seems that all that mattered to our heroes was commercial success, especially Stateside.  That's probably why the neo-prog movement of the early 80s was so successful as it reconnected the music with the audience...

^ now that you mention it, where's Marillion? No 80s double shots without Marillion?
Joke aside, it's a good poll, let's see some more.

Genesis quite comfortably ahead of Rush.

With Roger Waters gone Pink Floyd became about as exiting as U2. Less - actually. IMO! Total Yawnfest. The rest is terrible as well.

^ Genesis still had a shred of creativity in them which had deserted the rest (including Rush after 'Grace Under Pressure')

Voted Rush but not a big fan of Countdown. I would prefer Losing It / Analog Kid or Losing it / Subdivisions.

Actually, I'd prefer Analog Kid / Digital Man over all of them

The theme of this particular poll was the "classic rock" bands my FM station was playing at the time.  Marillion was not on the playlist.  Also, I wanted to keep the number of choices relatively small, so that we didn't get one of those polls where each choice has one or two votesSmile

Could you ask the radio station to play Atom Heart Mother and Echoes? Tongue

In the 80s they would have hung up on you and then played "Money" and "Another Brick".   However, back in the early 70s that same station absolutely would have played the long tracks as well as obscure album tracks.   The station still exists today, quite similar to the way it was in the 80s, although with very little new music.  Funny how that "classic rock" format was formed and has endured, despite the fact that most people will tell you they hate it.  LOL
