Helloween - first thing that comes to mind, 80s brilliance, 90s very good, lost interest after this Blind Guardian - great in the 90's, less so in 00's Gamma Ray - great in the 90s Rage Elegy Heaven's Gate
and then US
Riot Nevermore (power/thrash) Metal Church (power/thrash)
I am not sure if there are still some VERY GOOD power metal bands

Sorry to inform you, but power metal is the most repulsive metal subgenre for me. Maybe a little weird to hear from prog fan, but most of it is too pompous for me, like listening to samples from Hollywood spectacles recorded in Cinestar over average and fairly predictable guitar/bass/drums patterns and history/fantasy lyrics that frequently make Neil Peart's lyrics sound like Brecht in comparison. And their stage antics and portrayals in social media don't help them much for me.

I love most metal. Death, not so much. Power...well. It's growing on me. I think the key to enjoying it is fully embracing it as parody. I always hated Manowar...until I just gave in and accepted it for what it was. Ridiculous. Then I could truly enjoy it.

Are you referring to recent days or the 80's/90's? I think back then power metal was better. It has now become very formulaic with all the elements that you describe.

From what I've heard only Helloween and Gamma Ray might be "exceptions" with some really decent tracks. Most of the 90's bands already sound like what I've described to me (Hammerfall, Kamelot...), and I really didn't have a need to go further away from what I've been hearing constantly from metalheads I was surrounded with during my secondary school years. And I think the problem for me might lie in the fact that power metal precursors like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden already have something that annoys me in their sound and approach.

Got into Judas Priest nearly a decade ago and recently collected all their stuff from their 1974 - 1990 period. A surprisingly solid output if I do say so myself.

Stained Class if one of the best records to come out of that time frame. Just Stellar.

That's why since the millennium my fav power metal acts are primarily based out of Japan. Great instrumental skill and wild exuberance. Lots of great female acts as well. Some of my favs:
Galneryus (arguably the most significant)
Tears of Tragedy
Cross Vein (garish but fun)
Mary's Blood (awesome all girl act)
Bridear (another good all girl act)
And my favorite, Light Bringer, who are superb with some of the best workouts out there (including bass guitar) and a phenomenal female vocalist.

Yeah, right on! I can understand some being turned off by the whole "singing in Japanese" deal...giving it an "anime" vibe or something, but I have no issues with it.
