It just means folk music from the US.
If you want the exhaustive answer as to how folk music is defined, just read the wiki article:

You are wrong! I do not class the Eagles as folk!...
From my understanding reading this, it's made up of different genres of music, not just folk. To me! American folk does not mean anything to me as a heading!... IMHO

Go complain to the OP about it. He's the one who said that CCR and the Eagles were "two American folk bands". I (and I'm sure most others) would firmly call the Eagles country rock.

Creedence for me definitely. I don't hate the Eagles at all but without a doubt CCR are one of my top classic-rock groups, whereas Eagles are often just a band that I acknowledge as "being there" without having much of a desire to explore their catalog. That said, Hotel California (the song) is both a lyrical and musical masterpiece... Still not as good as Creedence in my opinion.

Never been much of an Eagles fan - it's CCR all the way for me, but then I play in a band called Fortunate Sons.

Never bought albums but payed their numbers at times. That Eagles Tull number is a big favourite as well as anything that says Joe Walsh.
If I never hear Proud Mary again I shall be happy... (sorry, hippy teachers when I were a kid who had to push the message...)
Always regarded Eagles as dude ranch rock n roll. But yeah, Felder / Walsh is undeniably awesome. And yes, even I gotta admit they have a clutch of decent numbers.
CCR never had the instrumental chops that made me think ooh I must get everything. Fogerty has a few appealing songs.
I just have to think ... Allman Brothers... and these guys kinda well, fade. A bit.
