Topic: Tangram Vs. Exit (TD Album Duel Part 4) Posted: January 07 2017 at 09:17
This poll may seem like a bit of a stretch to some, but at this point Im just trying to delay the inevitability of the Phaedra Vs Rubycon Duel to end all duels. Tangram gets my vote, as it somewhat returns to that classic TD sound right before the 80's. Exit isn't bad, as it turned a new leaf for the band, but just because the band evolved their sound doesn't mean I have to like it.

I don't think that Tangram can be described as returning to classic TD... It is very melodic but on the other hand the sound creation and technology is very forward looking (OK, it already was in the 70s but sounded quite different back then). In any case it's one of my TD favourites. Exit has its moments and too many non-moments.

I think Tangram is going to win by a lot. Exit's not bad, but it foreshadows a lot the future direction TD will pursue (shorter tracks, poppier tunes, more digital synths, no more Mellotron, etc).

not a big fan of Tangram. I think it's quite boring overall, but I was also comparing it with the previous Forece Majeure which is my fave TD album. I found Exit to be very refreshing and with much more punch, not that one is necessary looking for punch in TD music

Easily Tangram
Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.
No vote since i can't remember a beep from either of the two
The only 80s TD I listen to these days are Logos, Hyperborea and Green Desert. I guess I must refresh my memory.
no Underwater Sunlight?
Hi Ken No it's been quite a while since I last heard Underwater Sunlight. I remember feeling the synths were just a wee bit too "soapy" for my tastes. Then again it was cut during the 80s. I might have a go at it later on when my head needs calm before it needs sleep.

I love both (FFS is my favorite line-up), but I hold Exit in a higher regard. The sounds they employed on that record are fabulous. Yes, there are no side-length pieces (but there would be on the next few), but Exit succeeds on every level, thanks in no small part to the invitation of Johannes Schmoelling to the fold.
Brilliant!
This is one of the best compositions TD ever recorded, IMO.

"Song of the Whale Pt. 2" has one of Edgar's best guitar solos! The melding of those power chords with Sunlight 's "aquatic" aesthetic in "Pt. 1" is something I never tire of.
It's definitely going on the stereo tonight. I hope it doesn't turn out to be 'wow fantastic music but why does it need all that soap and margarine?' Then again tastes shift and writhe - mine do and have continued to do so ever since I broke the code to Ummagumma some 25 years ago. I started out hating the damn thing.

I listened to Exit today and found it very good indeed. Was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Tangram is next or maybe Underwater Sunlight. Right now I'm chillin with Klaus Schulze's newest 'Privée'.

I don't mind soapy, if I get your drift!
And I get goosebumps listening to the continents rattled off in German.
