Hi folks
Not sure if this is news already, but IQ have now reissued 2010 band-approved remaster of The Wake as a standalone single cd (at a sensible price). So no need to pay silly money for the box set, and if you want an overview on how the remaster sounds then here's my take on it: https://momentstransition.wordpress....the-wake-1985/ Cheers! |

Sounds good. I dived into IQ backwards, beginning with Road of Bones. I haven't reached Wake yet. I like all of the albums so far, but I feel Road of Bones is best. If I had grown up with IQ, I wonder if my opinion would be different.

My favorite IQ album remains Ever, with The Wake being the runner-up. Both are musts if you're an IQ fan.

Funny thing, I think Road of Bones is their worst so far. But it has al been explained somewhere. When you grow up with a band, the nostalgia thing weighs very heavy.

I'll always be a Lush Attic fanboy, but love The Wake too, and Ever. These are my top 3 from I.Q.
Curious to hear how 'improved' the remaster of The Wake is. |

Are You Sitting Comforatbly was my first and The Wake my second album. Loved them both to bits.
Nothing At All is my favorite song of the band.

I can't find much info on the 2010 version........Discogs simply states that Holmes remastered it, but there is no mention of any remixing, which is a tear down and then rebuild basically and from usually the master tapes which is preferable.
Anyhow, I'll wait/hope for vinyl releases as my CDs are fine for now, last thing I want is more CDs. Road of Bones on vinyl is pretty freaking amazing....

Untrue. Lush Attic was remixed but not The Wake. Anyway, the sound quality is excellent.

^ Correct, Lush was remixed in 2013 by Holmes and also issued on clear limited vinyl.

Me too! So far, Road of Bones is my fav but also like/bought Ever, Frequency ( and Forever Live). Dark Matter prob is next on agenda. Subterrania really didn't grab me at all. Haven't tried Nomzamo, (edit: 7th house), and Sitting Comfortably yet. From what i read those are the weaker albums? Finding this site a year or two ago has had me playing catchup, can't listen to everything :D

Nomzamo and Are You Sitting are not weaker. They are different.
Different singer, different sound. They are edgier, have pop influences. They fit the time very well. Seventh House is their most ´seventies´ sounding record. I love it to bits.
Subterrannea is just splendid. Maybe the best neo-progalbum ever made (paired with Generation 13 by Saga). But I have no idea what it would be like to discover IQ backwards. Maybe all the other albums are weaker. To me they are stronger. In my case, both Fequency and Road of Bones haven't convinced me.... |

I like every album they've made (Nomzamo and AYSC are good in a very different way), but Subterranea is the best for me. Along with The Masquerade Overture and Seasons End, the best neo-prog album ever.

So many good, excellent and essential albums and DVDs.
My preferred song remains Born brilliant: great lyrics, great rythm, great everything... Think of it each time I see the rise of a new young politician |

I've been a solid IQ fan for 10 years now, but I still don't have the "original" Wake - only the Live version. It's possibly my least favourite album, with the exception of AYSC and Nomzamo, which are almost unlistenable. It has grown on me with time, but with Wake tracks well represented on their live albums I don't feel I need to own another version. Lowlights for me are Corners (ugh!) and The Thousand Days (boring) but there is some good stuff elsewhere, particularly WIdow's Peak and Headlong.
In terms of a favourite album, I find it hard to choose between Road of Bones, Frequency, Dark Matter and Seventh House. Subterranea and Ever are just below this group, and then Lost Attic.

IQ's early live album Living Proof covers Lush Attic and Wake territory and those are probably the best live versions. But IQ's one of the most consistent live acts out there.

I can't name a single I.Q. album I dislike and The Seventh House is not a week album it has (IMO) two of their best songs (The Seventh House and Guiding Light) and I would give Subterranea another chance I too at first had a hard time getting into it but it has turned out to be the album I find myself going back to time and time again. It also has one of there best 20 minute songs, The Narrow Margin.
