In 6 weeks my family and I are taking a trip to Florence, Italy. While there I hope to make a couple stops to the local record stores (new and old). Any Italian classics I should be on the look-out for? Currently the only Italian album in my collection is Premiata Forneria Marconi's Storia Di Un Minuto.

Here's my current list of albums to keep and eye out for:

Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Chocolate Kings
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Stati Di Immaginazione
Premiata Forneria Marconi - L'Isola Di Niente
Aktuala - Aktuala
Aktuala - La Terra
Automat - Automat
Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza - The Feed-Back

Any further suggestions of prog, jazz and avant-garde Italian music (preferably found on LP) is greatly appreciated.

Stars and air find
Themselves here at night
Cold and dark as everything
Deep and wet and secret
Carried off into their ethers

nice.. yeah album stores over there are like going being set loose in a striphouse with a wad of 100's and a bag of coke...

you are pretty limited there... ie .. there is a LOT you can get and find very cheaply there. You're best bet is peruse the top albums list and check out those albums, for the most part very well reviewed, and find the ones that float your boat.

First recommended stop for you...  AREA...

^ good list... a diverse list which is the rub.  It isn't all the same song and dance man...  recommending RPI is hard, especially beyond the essentials (which the OP should check out). There is a lot of stylistic range in Italian prog.

I do have a hunch...

prog.. jazz.. avant...

that Area would be right up his alley.

Micky's so right! I'm addicted to Italian.  Area is my keystone Italian band.  2/3's of the progarchive's top 20 is relatively cheap.  I know because I bought all of the top twenty in the last 3 years.  And it was totally worth it.     The rest will cost you 20 bananas or more.

Todays Italian Prog scene?  Smack dab in the middle of a  Renaissance, Resplendent, and shockingly beautiful.    Italian maestros inebriated on vitamin fortified red wine...spiked with opium and hemoglobin.   So thrilling to glissade upon the crest of a wave, on a Venice canal, serenaded in your own aural gondola!  I envy you!

Plenty of great suggestions that have been floating around so far. There are a few that I'll just mention again because I think they're so darn awesome that they deserve to be double recommended:

Goblin - Roller
Osanna - Palepoli
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Quella Vecchia Locanda
All of the PFM stuff up to and including L'Isola Di Niente, plus Stati Di Immaginazione

Here are a few great albums that I haven't seen mentioned yet, though:

Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
Biglietto Per l'Inferno - Biglietto Per l'Inferno
Buon Vecchio Charlie - Buon Vecchio Charlie
Cherry Five - Cherry Five
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Il Tempo Della Gioia

And, of course, this bad boy...

Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys

The keyboard-based prog album to end all keyboard-based prog albums. I don't even like keyboard-based prog that much and I still think this one is a stone cold classic. Simply awesome stuff.

Music listed as Prog here (If I had to choose one fave of this list then it would be the Leprino).

- Alphataurus (self-titled) 1973
- Area (the first four are great, but my faves are Caution Radiation Area and Crac!)
- Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso (I like the debut best, but love the first three)
- Franco Battiato (love the first five, but recommend Sulle Corde di Aries)
- Dedalus - self-titled
- Fabio Frizzi - The Beyond especially and City of the Living Dead
- Goblin - Suspiria (but various great ones)
- Franco Leprino - Integrati .. Disintegrati (one of my all-time favourite albums)
- Il Balletto do Bronzo - Ys
- Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra
- Orchestra Njervudarov - Con le orecchie di Eros
- Osanna - Palepoli
- Picchio Dal Pozzo - self-titled (wonderful Italian Cantebury sound) then Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi
- Pierrot Lunaire - Gudrun (love both albums)
- Reale Accademia Di Musica - self-titled
- Sensations' Fix - Portable Madness
- Yugen - Labirinto d'Acqua (a modern one, not sure about LP availability)

My favourite Italians overall are Ennio Morricone and Egisto Macchi. Most any Morricone up to the late 70s is great, but Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange, Maddelena,, Citta Violenta, La Donna Invisible, Una Lucertola Con..., Milano Odia, Un Uomo da Rispattare, and Il Sorriso dei Grande Tentatore are some faves. Love his spaghetti western stuff too. With Macchi, Voix, Futurissimo, and Bioritmi are really great.

And I adore Alessandro Brugnolini's Utopia. Berto pisano's Interabang I really like too, but some might find it muzaky.

Il Volo
Corte Dei Miracoli
Maxophone
Le Orme first 8 albums

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Don't forget Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno's splendid Per... Un Mondo di Cristallo. One of the finest RPI albums in my opinion.

I think Locanda delle Fate "Forse le lucciole non si amano più" is a must have.

If you don't already know that you like it I'd skip that one and go for any of the other albums suggested. Kudos for Aktuala and Gruppo - amazing stuff! If you're lucky enough to stumble over any of Zeit's two albums* while looking out for the former band in the prog folk/world weirdo-section, do not hesitate.

-I recently rediscovered Perigeo - infact all their first four albums were (far) better and more inventive than I remembered. I basically agree with all of Sean Trane's reviews

As usual Logan covers about 90% of the albums and artists I'd recommend. I seem to have more of a soft spot for Le Orme though - four first albums again... and my Goblin-favorite is Profondo Rosso (+ I honestly can't remember Orchestra Njervudarov).

They're stunningly beautiful*

..and wild

Well, my tastes have been influenced by your recommendations. Love Perigeo too, missed it. Love the Zeit you posted!

Some Orchestra Njervudarov (not an album I'm that often in the mood for, but has some very nice music):

I third the recommendation of Quella Vecchia Locanda's debut. The first RPI album I heard, and still my favourite (not that I'm too familiar with RPI myself yet, not as much as I would've liked anyway (the old time and money excuse Wink)).

Or he could go straight to this post Pierre (hellogoodbye), one of this site's great RPI connoisseurs, made with his top 40 Italian albums a while back. There's some more list from a few of our other connoisseurs on the preceding pages of that thread as well. Happy treasure hunting!
