Topic: Song for.. Yes? Posted: February 08 2017 at 05:09 |
We are in Fab Feb, so I tend to listen to albums that were issued in Februaries. Kind of "happy birthday" party. And so, during my recent listenings to Kansas' "Song For America" from their same-titled album (issued in 1975), I noticed, that there might be sort of "echoes" of "Song For America" piece (just this one song, not the whole album) in Yes' "Into the Lens" piece from their 1980's "Drama" album. Nothing wrong with that, obviously, why shouldn't Yes be inspired by other bands - it could actually be quite flattering for Kansas, I would have thought so. But I'm just wondering whether Trevor, before writing his song, was, by any chance, listening a bit to Kansas? Probably yes..

As prog fans, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes couldn't believe their luck at joining Yes, so highly likely I would have thought. A more obvious connection is with Steve Hackett who had two members of Kansas guesting on Please Don't Touch.

As a fan of both albums, I have never considered "Into the Lens" to have been inspired by "Song for America." The similarities are fairly superficial, I think.

Agreed, both songs are pretty different. And great too! What mildly links them in my eyes, or rather ears, is one "similar" leitmotif, which should not be difficult to discern while listening to both songs. So yes, fairly superficial similarity.

The intro rhythmic structure is about the only similarity I find. But any similarity between my favorite Kansas song and certainly a resident in my bottom 5 most hated Yes songs is pretty humorous.

Two great songs, two great albums, two great bands. That's a lot of similarity right there!!!

Quite rightly so... Well, Drama is not a Yes album, to be exact. Hilarious indeed

You may see a smile on Tony Banksī face but thatīs unlikely.

I've never noticed it personally but I suppose it's possible.
It's been well documented that Yes borrowed part of 21st century schizoid man for Heart of the Sunrise. The opening bass line to HotS has that same kind of intensity.

People have accused Livgren (or maybe Hope) of ripping off Rutherford's baseline on Watcher of the Skies for Song for America.
If you listen close, you can hear a bit of similarity, but I think most music, good and bad, is recycled.
