So I'll admit right off the bat this is something of a nice sub-genre of a nice genre, but as someone who grew up on the motown, soul and funk of his dad's music tastes - a man with a natural disdain for prog rockers, as it happens - on the way to forging my own intensely personal (most people I encounter might have vaguely heard the label, no more. If they have heard of prog rock, they tend to be very mocking!) love affair with prog, my natural affinity for the prog asthetic drew out a number of compatible (I think) funk entries into the prog catalogue. All of the following are efforts of the phenomenal and peerless 'Parliament/Funkadelic' headed by George Clinton from 70s until today. The final entry 'Promentalwashbackpsychosis' is probably closest I'll get to prog funk.
Take a look:
Maggot Brain (below is 1978 Houstion, Live version) Disco-ish: Funkentelechy (Parliament) Uncle Jam (Funkadelic) Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts (Funkadelic) This one just needs to be listened to, to be believed. It's probably the best example of true prog funk: 'Promentalsh*tbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad [The Doo Doo Chasers]' (Potential runners-up: 'Volcano Rupture' by Slave |

interesting distinction between Prog-Funk and the Funk-Fusion of cats like Stanley Clarke or Herbie Hancock who were much less rock in sound and image -

^ Middle English (originally denoting an antidote against venom): from Old French triacle, via Latin from Greek thēriakē antidote against venom, feminine of thēriakos (adjective), from thērion wild beast. Current senses date from the late 17th century.

Seems a potentially dangerous synonym for molasses.

Okay, Dean, you inspired me into posting my 4-hour mixtape of pure, unfiltered 70's funk IN EVERY THREAD OF THIS FORUM.
Anyway, Eradicus, could you explain us if we're in face of progressive funk or psychedelic funk? The word of "funkadelic" sounds like a clear hint... |

Early Sly and the Family Stone albums seem prog funkish to me. And then there's this... Something modern Edited by omphaloskepsis - February 13 2017 at 06:39 |
