Topic: Pink Floyd songs that stick with you? Posted: February 25 2017 at 09:15 |
Dogs- Honestly, this song is amazing. It's a trip, and the philosophy behind it is great. Also I'm a huge George Orwell fan. Atom Heart Mother Suite- This is a perfect song. Everything's timed to be superfluous and enjoyable. The Nile Song- More is so underrated. This set a lot of standards for garage rock with it's crunchy sound. Careful With that Axe Eugene- I was underwhelmed by Ummagumma, but this song really made it for me. It just comes out of nowhere and hits you hard.

Speaking of not picking the most obvious, the one track from The Wall that sticks with me the most is "Nobody Home". One of those "Stuck in a life and can't get out" moments. Not as heart-wrenching as "Jugband Blues", but still quite depressing. Also, the build-up part just before the final verse of "Echoes".

So much music from Floyd that really sticks with me. I just love them. Oh yeah, and Jugband Blues... that one is frustrating. The lyrics are really something else, it almost seems Syd was writing about his own mental breakdown, and some melodies are really nice, but I feel the song falls just a bit short... and the war band doesn't help for my apreciation of the song. However, the BBC version is really better and I do enjoy that one.

About the studio version falling short: is it because of the war band itself or that the "freak out" portion doesn't last as long there?

So many of them stick with me that trying to name them all would be a waste of time, so I 'll name my absolute favorites instead.
Echoes, from Meddle Pigs (Three Different Ones), from Animals Us and Them, from The Dark Side of the Moon Wish You Were Here, from Wish You Were Here See Emily Play Astronomy Domine, from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

| I don't really identify the "freak out" portion, but I guess it's mostly the war band part itself. The instrument used in the BBC version to replace it is less annoying. I wonder if this song was ever played with Gilmour already on the band... I have liked the way Gilmour has interpreted Syd's songs the few times he has played them... though this one may be too personal for Syd to be sung correctly by anyone else.

Echoes - Breathe - Us And Them - everything on the live album of Ummagumma - everything from Animals (OK, we can discuss Pigs On The Wing ) ...and to nominate an outsider, I love the Main Theme of More.
