Absolutely the worst way to listen to any type of music except a mix tape which is already shuffled. The artists put into the order they did for a reason.

Another thing for me, I can like some songs within albums I don't really like so much, or which have other songs that do nothing for me, or even annoy me, so, why should I listen to those other songs repeatedly? I just put them in another list or compilation, and can listen to them in whichever order I thought apropriate... or shuffle them, however.

Not me .I am closing in on 60. Shuffle all the way.Albums, artists, playlists and so on. I also delete songs from albums I don't like. Why waste time on songs I don't like, when there is not enough time to hear all the ones I like. My I-pod is like my radio station with not a sh*tty son on it.

The people in this thread need to lighten up. Even though I listen to full albums 90% of the time, that other 10% of the time when I switch things up is always a blast. Shuffling is a great way to hear things that I haven't heard in years, and lets me get a whole lot more mileage out of my music collection.

I don't think I've ever purposely used the shuffle function - I've turned it on without knowing A LOT, which gets fixed as soon as I spot the error. I do select individual tunes and make playlists for parties and such tomfoolery. I never shuffle anything other than cards (poorly).

Also when you've got your iPod packed with so much crazy music as I have it can quickly become a little tedious to your mates whilst sipping beers in the local park, when the speakers continue to jump from Beefheart and Art Zoyd to Dead Kennedys and Sun Ra. In such situations I always prepare a little playlist or similarly find an album that won't send people screaming for the hills, something like Boards of Canada or Syd Arthur perchance.

I have no issue making playlists that contain a lot of different stuff or similar themes. In those cases, shuffling works fine. However, some albums must (for me) be listened to in their intended track order. I may skip a song or two that I don't care for but I listen in order. For instance, when I spin Power Windows from Rush, I skip Big Money but them listen to the rest of the album in order. When I listen to Aja from Steely Dan, I never skip a song and listen in order.
For those of you who have stated you don't skip songs, why do you listen to songs you may not like? There have to be certain songs you don't care for. Life is too short to listen to music you don't like.

| In terms of commercial releases it is often the producer who chooses the order rather than the musical artists themselves in the end. Sometimes the mastering engineer is part of it, and sometimes the execs play a part. Often it's a collaborative decision. It may be an artistic decision, a commercial decision or a combination of both. Sometimes the record company wants a certain length and tracks are added that the artist is not happy with. Like with films where you sometimes find various cuts of a movie, the same thing can happen with albums. The artist is not always happy with the order or happy with the reasoning, so why should the audience be happy? And just because an order was chosen for an album does not mean that that order is the best for every listener. Making amateur mix-tapes can be quite creative in a sense, just as professional compilations can be. Back to randomly shuffling, I've already shared my thoughts on why I like it sometimes, but to reiterate: that can lead to re-discovering music, and produce some very happy juxtapositions (or at least ones that make me happy). It can make music fresh again for me. To each his or her own, but for those that have never tried it, don't automatically knock it. Sometimes I want variety, but since I only have albums that I like on my iPod (and I have a great many) the results are much more likely to be enjoyable to me than listening to the radio.

Typically I'll go for full albums, I like to search my library until something sticks out at me. Most of the albums in my library are best listened to this way. However, if I don't know what mood I'm in I hit shuffle all. I enjoy doing this for two reasons really:
1. I may hear something that triggers my current mood, then I know exactly what album to go for 2. Something awesome I haven't heard in a while may pop up, then I'll go back to that album/artist for a bit
Sometimes neither of the above happens and I just get a sweet list of great songs with an occasional skip in there.

Happens to me frequently when shuffling with headphones while mowing the lawn or something.

No, never, and I don't skip tracks either. No one ever says that a greatest-hits album or a various artists compilation is better than an original studio album and there is a very good reason why. On a well produced album track order is not random, it's carefully chosen by the artist and their producer to create a unified whole that is more than just a collection of songs. Shuffle is second only to "gaps between tracks" as the reason I dislike listening to music on media-players of any kind.

I fully agree. No shuffling and no skipping! Shuffle off, shufflers!

I dDefinitely shuffle when I'm in the mood for it, and I mix my prog with classical, metal, hip hop, country, folk, and pop in the same playlist.
Used to be against this but really all that actually matters is that you enjoy the music in the moment you are listening to it. And besides, hearing the same song in the same context all the time gets boring. Hearing some Leprous followed by some Sia followed by some Philip Glass followed by some Sturgill Simpson gives each song greater contrast, and may make them sound better than they might have surrounded by more similar sounding songs. In this sense, it can be easier to listen for details because they sound 'fresher' compared to if you were listening to only one thing.
I feel like I might be on my own in this one...
